Investigating optical properties on the nanoscale

Our group focuses on the fundamental optical properties on the nanoscale of 2D materials and single-photon emitters to develop novel functionalities for quantum technology applications. We use near-field techniques to achive an optical resolution beyond the diffraction limit together with conventional techniques.

The group is funded by the NRW Rückkehrprogramm Quantentechnologie.

New publication on phonon polariton confinement in boron nitride triangles

Our new work is now available online in Adv. Opt. Mater.
It is great fun to work with Andrzej Wismołek, Johannes Binder and their team from Warsaw University. They are able to grow high-quality boron nitride crystals via MOVPE which allowed Max and Oskar to study the phonon polariton confinement in triangular structures. This is a first step towards integration of phonons in quantum optics.

Student intern project

This was our first try building a model AFM with a student intern. Joel stayed for four weeks and did a great job 3D-printing, wiring, and constructing this model AFM. Besides that, he visited lectures, tutorials, seminars and lab classes. We hope to see him as a physics student in the future.

TEACHING WORLDS

The publication “TEACHING WORLDS – Insights into 16 faculties” is now online, featuring a photo of Hannah and Oskar in our lab presenting the physics department. The result turned out great!
Many thanks to Christina Hoppenbrock for the article and Linus Peikenkamp for the picture.

Insights from ISPSA in Jeju Island

Iris recently returned from an inspiring trip to the ISPSA conference on Jeju Island, Korea! We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the organizers for inviting Iris to present our latest results on near-field spectroscopy of hBN.
The event was filled with stimulating sessions and poster presentations, and it was wonderful to catch up with international collaborators. The beautiful setting of Jeju Island and a lovely conference dinner made the trip truly special.

MüSIM 26

Dennis and Sruthi have presented their shared poster at the MüSIM26 Meeting of the CRC1459 - Intelligent Matter.

New group member

We welcome Hannah Unterberg to our group. She recently started her Master project. Her first sample preparation steps already look promising. We wish her lots of success with the next steps and plenty of fun.

New group member

We welcome Yunus Waheed as new Postdoc in our group. During his PhD at Indian Institute of Technology Goa he investigated local straining mechanisms and photon emission from 2D semiconductors. Combining this expertise with near-field spectroscopy open exciting perspectives for his and our research.

Finished Bachelor Project

Simone has given the final presentation on her bachelor thesis.
By studying color centers in hBN with different laser frequencies she strengthened our knowledge on the phonon-assisted optical excitation process. We wish her lots of fun in her master studies.

Seminar Talk in Utrecht

Iris went for a wonderful trip to the beautiful city of Utrecht, where she visited Marlous Kamp! A major highlight of the visit was Iris’s seminar talk, which sparked excellent discussions and drew very thoughtful questions from the audience. Between the great scientific exchange and fascinating tours of the local laboratories, it was an incredibly rewarding trip.

Inspiring Science at the DPG Conference in Dresden

The group just returned from a highly successful trip to the DPG Spring Conference in Dresden! We had a great time catching up with the physics community, listening to fascinating talks, and engaging in excellent discussions during the poster sessions. Also the focus session Iris organized together with Tobias Heindel and Michael Lorke was well received. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat with us about our research—we are already looking forward to next year for the 90th edition in Regensburg!

Iris recently had a productive and exciting week in Spain! She first attended the QLITES workshop in Oviedo, where she engaged in stimulating discussions about cutting-edge research in quantum light sources.
Following the workshop, Iris visited her former host institute in San Sebastián. While there, she served on the doctoral tribunal for Yaizia Asensio's PhD defense. We extend our warmest congratulations to Yaizia (from the nanodevices group at nanoGUNE) on her successful defense of her thesis on magnetism in perovskites!
