Power and inequality as neglected dimensions of sustainability research

Many actors from politics, the sciences, the economy and civil society agree on the necessity of a societal transformation towards sustainability. However, they regularly reach their limits when it comes to the point of taking over the responsibility for future developments. In their contribution “Power and social inequality as neglected dimensions of sustainability research. Reflections on the relationship between sustainability and responsibility” ZIN-Junior Scholars Björn Wendt and Benjamin Görgen point at this blind spot of sustainability research. Using the theories of the American Sociologist C. Wright Mills, they propose to always consider inequality and power relations when reflecting upon responsibility.

Wendt and Görgen thus perfectly match with the subject of the volume, which discusses responsibilisation in the field of sustainable development. The book was published at Transcipt Verlag in February 2018 and is accessible as Open Acess file.
