On 2 September 2026, the DFG Roundtable “Offene Wissenschaft im Zeitalter generativer KI?” (“Open Science in the Age of Generative AI?”) took place at the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin, in cooperation with the Center for Responsible Digitalization (ZEVEDI). Participants discussed current changes and prospects for scientific practice in relation to artificial intelligence. Prof. Dr. Reinold Schmücker, director of the Centre for Advanced Study, gave a short presentation on the topic “Wissen schützen vor KI?”. In it, he emphasised that knowledge is in need of protection in at least six respects: as the result of invested effort and resources; as a resource for forecasting; as a practical resource; as a resource that may be decisive in competition; as a central element of humanity’s understanding of the world and of itself; and, above all, as an intrinsically valuable asset. The event concluded with a public panel discussion titled “Open Science in Transition – for and with Society”, featuring Prof. Dr. Petra Gehring (ZEVEDI), Dr. habil. Anne Krüger (Weizenbaum Institute), Prof. Dr. Franziska Böhm (FIZ Karlsruhe), and Prof. Dr. Steffen Staab (University of Stuttgart), chaired by Prof. Dr. Sonja Schimmler (Weizenbaum Institute, TU Berlin, Fraunhofer FOKUS).
