Know before it spreads: GeoAI4EI

The new research project GEOAI4EI, funded by the EU, was launched with a Kick-Off Event hosted at IFGI on 26-28 August 2026. The project aims to develop an open-source, trustworthy, and ethical Artificial Intelligence toolbox to strengthen epidemic intelligence for pandemic preparedness and response. GeoAI4EI brings together geospatial data, Earth Observation, epidemiological models and AI to improve how epidemic intelligence is identified, analysed and used, supporting earlier detection and more informed decision-making. The coordinator at the University of Münster is Dr. Brian Pondi.

Studying Geoinformatics - Application for the WS 26/27

The "BSc Geoinformatics" program has open admission. Enrollment is possible from early June until October 9 (online enrollment portal). This program is taught in German.

Best Student Award at the GeoMed Conference

Poshan Niraula, doctoral candidate at the Spatio-Temporal Modelling Lab, has received the "Best Student Award" at the GeoMed Conference 2026, held in Pamplona, Spain, from June 17 to 19. His poster, titled "Spatiotemporal Causal Analysis of Human Mobility on Disease Transmission", examines the causal effect of human mobility on weekly COVID-19 case numbers within New York City's zip code areas.

Geomundus Conference 2026: Geospatial Intelligence for Disaster Resilience

This year's Geomundus Conference will take place on October 16 and 17 in Castellón, Spain, organized by students from our Erasmus Mundus program. The theme for this year is "Geospatial Intelligence for Disaster Resilience." Abstracts for presentations can be submitted via the Geomundus Conference homepage until August 1.

Defying climate change with the knowledge of the many - Citizen Science Preis for Selani Thomas

The Münster University Foundation and the department Knowledge and Technology Transfer are awarding Selani Thomas, recent master graduate at the Institute of Geoinformatics, one of the prizes at the Citizen Science Competition. Thomas' research project, supervised by Prof. Angela Schwering and in cooperation with Lugao Kasberg from the organisation “Mangyans for Peace and Sustainable Development”, focussed on the connection between climate change, food insecurity and the scope for action in the Hanunoo-Mangyan community on the island of Mindoro on the Philippines. The award ceremony took place on 21 April.
