Cartan subalgebras of C*-algebras are maximally abelian regular subalgebras that have played an important role in the connections that C*-algebras have with dynamical systems
and geometric group theory. They have also featured in the classification programme as it has been shown that every classifiable C*-algebra has a Cartan subalgebra. An important tool here is the understanding of how Cartan subalgebras can be built in inductive limit C*-algebras as limits of Cartans in the building blocks. I will outline this and provide some new existence and uniqueness results concerning inductive limit Cartan subalgebras in certain classes of AH-algebras, many of which are not classifiable.
