Abstract: We will discuss the definitions of Chow groups of a formal scheme and of the mapping from the Chow groups of a scheme to those of its completion along a closed subscheme. These are conceptual prerequisites for a Lefschetz theorem which compares the Chow groups of a quasi-projective variety with those of its completion along a hyperplane section, using extension theorems of G. Faltings.
