Abstract: We present different approaches for calculating the effective diffusion coefficient in a material with microstructure. The particular microstructure we consider comprises a collection of impenetrable spheres. First we look at the case of a periodic array of pores using the method of multiple scales. We then extend it to account for non-uniform porosity distributions. Finally, we compare the result to averaging over a stochastic distribution of spheres.
