Abstract: We introduce the notion of analytic torsion and discuss its fundamental properties in the context of compact manifolds, in particular the Cheeger-Müller theorem and the gluing formulae. We discuss the micro-local description of the heat kernel as a fundamental tool in the study of analytic torsion and give a glimpse into the current research.
