Abstract: I will give an overview of recent joint work with Clinton Conley concerning the use of a strong projective rigidity property of the usual action of SL_2(Z) on T^2 to discern the structure of the definable cardinal hierarchy just beyond R / Q. This will be a non-technical talk, and very few (if any) proofs will be given.
