Abstract: Algebraic geometry and algebraic topology have a long history of mutual influence and interaction. The most recent chapter in this story is the development over the last twenty years of the field of motivic homotopy theory. We will give a non-technical introduction to this theory and detail some of its successes in solving problems in algebra and algebraic geometry.
