I will introduce the class of calibrated σ-ideals of closed sets. This covers a number of ideals used in abstract analysis. I will state a recent joint result with Sabok and Kanovei: calibrated ideals have the free set property. This has numerous consequences for canonization of equivalence relations and forcing.
