In 1979, Alperin and Dennis studied the group K_2 of division algebras and proved, in particular, that the inclusion U(1) ?> SU(2) inside of the quaternions induces a surjection on the second group homology group. We briefly review the relevant structure of the quaternions and then sketch the main ideas behind the proof of this surjectivity result.
