Measurement of Student Engagement: A Critical Examination of Operational Definitions and the Development of a German-Language Scale

Student Engagement is considered a meta-construct that encompasses students’ behavioral, cognitive, and emotional reactions to school. Despite its widespread use in applied educational research, the definition and operationalization of student engagement remain controversial. This dissertation examines the theoretical and methodological limitations of prior engagement research and proposes practical solutions. Central questions addressed in this work include: What is the "core theory" of engagement? Can engagement be distinguished from motivation and self-regulation? What are the necessary and sufficient characteristics of an engagement indicator, or an engagement scale? Three interlocking empirical studies are presented that first develop and then comprehensively validate a new German-language self-report measure of student engagement, using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
