Konzept

The workshop aim is to examine one way of dealing with legal plurality: law consolidation, that is any attempt to order a multi-normative environment of an ancient polity. We want to explore the top down approach (attempts of consolidation pursued by the state or state-like authority: codifications, compilation, production of ordering principles), and the bottom-up pursuits of the ordinary users of law (informal collections of similar cases, handbook production, or scribal/notarial tradition). The method is a source-centred analysis, thus the invited speakers – researching broadly comprehended ancient civilisations – shall present sources and invite the audience to discuss them.
