Research focus

Atomic force microscopy (AFM)

  • AFM-based ultrastructural investigations of human pathogenic organisms to identify the mechanisms of action of bioactive natural products
  • Ultrastructural characterisation of drug forms (e.g. nanoparticles) by AFM


  • PEG-based ultramicrotomy of cells, tissues and whole organisms (section thickness around 100 nm) and subsequent microscopic characterisation (light microscopy and AFM (resolution down to approx. 10 nm))

Light microscopy

  • Morphological studies on human pathogenic organisms (brightfield, darkfield, phase contrast, interference contrast, polarisation and fluorescence)
