New interdisciplinary centre for the modelling of infection dynamics established at the University of Münster

On 19 November 2024, the new Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical Modeling of Infectious Disease Dynamics (IMMIDD) was officially founded at the University of Münster. The center‘s inaugural symposium was held on 10 July 2025 at the university castle. IMMIDD is dedicated to researching the dynamics of infections through close interdisciplinary cooperation.
The new centre aims to establish an interdisciplinary platform that unites expertise from various fields, such as information systems, epidemiology, mathematics and physics, to develop innovative models and simulations that can be effectively utilised by non-scientists, including political decision-makers. IMMIDD, therefore, brings together various scientific disciplines to improve the management of infectious diseases, enable evidence-based decision-making and strengthen international research through the use of mathematical and computer-assisted models.
A significant contribution is coming from Brazil: the new holder of the CAPES-funded Brazil Chair at the University of Münster, Prof. Dr. Daniel Villela from the renowned Brazilian research institution Fiocruz, will be cooperating with the new centre. His visiting professorship will be based at the Institute for Information Systems, with Prof. Dr. Bernd Hellingrath, and at the Institute for Epidemiology and Social Medicine, with Prof. Dr. André Karch as hosts. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hellingrath, who also serves as the Scientific Director of the Brazil Centre, and Prof. Dr. med. Karch are both members of the IMMIDD executive board.
