Full Professor of Public Law, International Law and European Union Law, Prof. Dr. Niels Petersen, was in Brazil between the end of August and the beginning of September to hold a series of meetings and lectures. On his first visit to the country, Prof. Petersen had the opportunity to meet with representatives of universities, the German Embassy and the recent partner of the WWU Faculty of Law, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil, in addition to giving lectures. In all the meetings, the mutual interest in deepening, extending and even initiating academic and research contacts was present.

The meetings held with representatives of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and University of São Paulo (USP) were marked by ideas on how to deepen existing relationships, facilitating contact between professors and researchers and allowing academic mobility. Also at both universities, Prof. Petersen was invited to give lectures to undergraduate and graduate students and professors, which also allowed for a direct dialogue with the audience at the end of each presentation. In the case of the visit to USP, the lecture took place within the scope of the Dialogues series, promoted by the research group “Constitution, politics and institutions”, which for years has invited foreign lecturers to speak on issues of Constitutional Law. The speech of Prof. Petersen reopened the series after a hiatus of more than two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In turn, the visit to the Federal Supreme Court, in Brasília, was marked by a vast program with the main court in the country. In addition to the meeting with representatives of the STF Department of Higher Studies, which has among its prerogatives to facilitate international research collaboration on legal issues, Prof. Petersen and Laura Redondo, director of the liaison office of the Brazil Centre in São Paulo, were able to participate in a plenary session of the court and visit the Supreme Court museum. At the end of the visit, they were received in the office of Minister Gilmar Mendes, Dean of the Court and alumnus of the WWU, in which he completed his Master's and Doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hans-Uwe Erichsen.
