    Disassembling Resistance against Large-Scale Land Acquisitions in Post-Conflict Countries: Peacebuilding and Reconciliation under Threat?


    My research focuses on the interplay between emerging resistance against large-scale land deals and conflict transformation dynamics. Promising at first in terms of reconstruction, the recent land rush has led to displacement, ecological damages and a loss of livelihoods in most cases and, hence entails unpredictable risks for reconciliation and long-term peace prospects in post-conflict settings. Confronted with a wide range of negative externalities communities increasingly resist the allocation of land to investors in various ways. I am particularly interested in understanding these contentious politics, the role of experienced violence and the own war-history as well as potential linkages to other grievances. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Cambodia and Sierra Leone I explore how contention and resistance play out in post-conflict societies and potentially impact on the risk of insurgency or armed conflict.
