Doing your doctorate in natural sciences or medicine?
For those of you who write their thesis in English, Karin Avemann-Seedorf, PhD in molecular genetics and German lecturer for writing and reading skills in natural sciences at the Sprachenzentrum of the WWU Münster, will present some sessions in English. Together we will run through the whole procedure of doing your PhD: ranging from the beginning (how to find a suitable project or supervisor) over special writing skills (how to write an abstract or exposé) to the publication of your thesis.
The events take place – except for the opening night – always room 106.
Thursday, April 12th, 2012 at 19.00: „Die Brücke“ has the pleasure to invite you to its Welcome Meeting for international PhD students.
At this session, we will give you an overview of our program and other services offered to you by the WWU.
Wednesday, April 25th, 2012: Talking about your thesis.
What does it mean - to do a doctorate? Reflections on expectations, demands, ups & downs. How can you find a suitable subject or supervisor? You have already found your subject? Exchange your experiences. Learn how to give your thesis a scientific structure.
Wednesday, May 9th, 2012: Structure and style of scientific writing
Appropriate scientific writing is important to explain your research to colleagues and to the public. You will get to know essential rules in structure and style of scientific writing in order to organize your thoughts and to present your thesis appropriately.
Wednesday, May 23th, 2012: Writing abstracts
Exercises in writing abstracts will prepare you for the most important skill in scientific writing. To improve writing, critical advices are essential: compare your own textual productions to those of others.
Wednesday, June 6th, 2012: The work is nearly done
Maybe you feel a high time pressure. When should I start to compile the data? How many hours a day must I work in the lab? Time management can be acquired by simple means and will help you to keep relaxed. Last but not least you must publish your thesis. You will get an overview over some options you have.
Optional: In an additional session you can present your thesis orally.
