Sustainability
its potential and its limits
Prof. Dr. Arne Johan Vetlesen
Since the 1987 Brundtland Report, sustainability has enjoyed a hugely influential career, academically as well as politically. Why? Because it promises that an ecologically sustainable future is not only compatible with continued economic growth, but premised upon it. Having acted upon this compatibility thesis for forty years, it is clear that it has proved empirically false and politically misguided. As a result, our society is ill-equipped to tackle the current multidimensional crisis. So what to do? Rely on taking the fossil companies, or states, to court? Give up politics as usual and turn to civil obedience? Or reinvent liberal democracy to enable it to rise to the challenge? The guest lecture will be broadcast via zoom. (--> https://go.wwu.de/r7uqa)
