Maria Pupynina arbeitet derzeit an dem DFG-Forschungsprojekt "Indigene Mehrsprachigkeit am Unterlauf der Kolyma". Zu Beginn ihres beruflichen Werdegangs beschäftigte sie sich mit dem Tschuktschischen und untersuchte dessen Grammatik und Verbreitung. Sie promovierte 2012 und befasst sich seit 2014 mit der Sprache der Niederkolyma-Tschuktschen und anderen indigenen Sprachen am Unterlauf der Kolyma.
