Scholarships

There are a lot of scholarships in Germany for which you can apply as a doctoral student – also as an international doctoral student – in order to finance your doctoral project. These scholarships are usually full scholarships. However, you do not get health insurance with a scholarship, unlike employment. The scholar must therefore organize his or her own health and nursing insurance.

Below, we have compiled various places in which you can look for more information on relevant foundations and other institutions to which you can apply for funding.

  • The WWU’s application information center for projects involving third-party funding, SAFIR (link in German), offers an overview of the various foundations and financing options as well as a doctoral guideline (link in German) with useful tips.
  • The DAAD’S scholarship database offers international doctoral students the opportunity to search for relevant financing options for their research project in Germany on the basis of their field, native country and status.
  • Euraxess offers a similar database for relevant funding, which is directed specifically at (young) international scientists. Your search is narrowed down here on the basis your native country, field and type of program.
  • The Union of Education and Science (“Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft“), also known as GEW, offers a comprehensive overview of scholarship donors and sponsers (link in German) on its homepage.
