Prof. Dr. Christian Thein (Department of Philosophy), the University’s Officer against anti-Semitism, Ludger Hiepel (Institute for Biblical Exegesis and Theology), and Prof. Dr. Regina Grundmann (Institute for Jewish Studies and Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics”) are hosting a series of public lectures on “School education and the prevention of anti-Semitism”. The lectures will be held in lecture theatre S1 (Schloss) on Mondays at 6.15 pm. To begin the series, Prof. Dr. Astrid Messerschmidt from the University of Wuppertal will speak on 6 May on “Continuities of anti-Semitism and the denial of responsibility – embedding historical awareness in educational processes”. The free events are open to the public; please register once by emailing gegen.antisemitismus@uni-muenster.de. Of particular interest to prospective teachers and educationists, the lecture series is organized jointly by the Educational Sciences in Teacher Training, the Centre for Teacher Training (ZfL), and the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics”.

German schools often witness anti-Semitic remarks and even acts of violence, which presents teachers with particular challenges. But how does anti-Semitism manifest itself in schools and what options are available to teachers? In five lectures, academics from Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and the universities of Wuppertal and Gießen will talk about didactic approaches, preventive measures, and manifestations of anti-Semitism in schools. The lecture series will continue in the winter term of 2024/25, when the focus will be on cultural history. (upm/pie)
