Title protection

Book titles are subject to legal protection if they have their own distinctive character. The legal basis for this is the Trade Marks (§§ 5, 15). If you wish to protect the title of a work before it is published, a title protection notice can be placed. Otherwise, the principle applies: whoever publishes the title first receives title protection.

In order to avoid violations of title protection, it should be checked in advance whether the planned title is not already occupied, e.g. via the VLB (Verzeichnis lieferbarer Bücher) or the KVK (Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog).

Further information on title protection can be found on the Börsenverein website.
