Welcome to the Institute of Materials Physics

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Reza Darvishi Kamachali has assumed the chair of "Materials Modelling" at our institute as of December 1, 2024. This chair is a joint appointment between the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and the University of Münster.

Together with his research group, Professor Kamachali conducts multiscale modeling to investigate the process-microstructure-properties-performance relationships of primarily metallic materials. His research spans a wide range of topics, including thermodynamics and kinetics of microstructure defects, the optimization of functional and structural properties, and the development of complex multi-component alloys. CALPHAD, phase-field methods, as well as chemo-mechanics, fracture mechanics, and crystal plasticity are integrated to predict microstructural evolution and properties of materials. In his research, while full-field simulations are used to investigate microstructure development under different processing and application conditions, mean-field and modern machine learning approaches are employed to correlate microscopic features with macroscopic properties.
We are already looking forward to correlating the results of quantitative simulations with the findings from our research.

We wish Professor Kamachali and his research group much success and enjoyment in their work, and we are especially looking forward to many interesting and engaging academic discussions and collaborations.

One of two Collaborative Research Centres (CRC) at the University of Münster will be receiving funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for another four years. Several million euros will go to CRC 1459 “Intelligent matter: From responsive to adaptive nanosystems”.

Summer School 2024 on „Recent Topics in Materials Research“ at the Institute of Materials Physics

During the final week of the spring semester in 2024, we organized a summer school titled “Recent Topics in Materials Research” at the Institute of Materials Physics. The event featured ten comprehensive lectures, each followed by time for questions and discussions, delivered by ten experts in materials physics from AG Wilde. Alongside participants joining via Zoom, we were delighted to welcome ten international undergraduate students from Nanjing, China, who attended in person. The opportunity for face-to-face interaction provided these young scientists with a more immersive experience in materials research at the Institute of Materials Physics, University of Muenster. We are pleased to facilitate such events, as they promote an open and international research culture, which we believe is essential for advancing timely science and research.

Nob(e)ler wird es nicht!

Zwei Nachwuchswissenschaftler der Universität Münster nahmen an der 73. Lindauer Nobelpreisträgertagung teil Wie wahrscheinlich war und ist es wohl, einer oder einem der 970 Nobelpreisträgerinnen und -trägern zu begegnen, die die begehrte Auszeichnung seit der Erstverleihung im Jahr 1901 bekommen haben? Es ist natürlich äußerst unwahrscheinlich. Denn derzeit leben rund acht Milliarden Menschen auf der Erde, hinzukommen weitere Milliarden, die seit 1900 geboren wurden und inzwischen verstorben sind. Wer seine Chancen erhöhen will, in die Nähe eines Preisträgers oder einer Preisträgerin zu kommen, sollte folgenden Tipp beherzigen: Besuchen Sie im Frühsommer die Bodenseestadt Lindau, genauer gesagt das Nordufer der nur einen halben Quadratkilometer kleinen Insel der Stadt. Dort, in der Inselhalle, treffen sich anlässlich der Lindauer Nobelpreisträgertagung seit 1951 jährlich Dutzende Koryphäen ihres Fachs und tummeln sich gemeinsam mit Hunderten Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftlern fast eine Woche lang in der etwa 27.000 Einwohner großen Stadt.

Vor wenigen Wochen war es wieder so weit: Der exklusive Tagungskreis fand sich in Lindau ein und die Stadt wurde nach Stockholm zum Epizentrum der Nobelpreisträger – fast 40 von ihnen und mehr als 630 Nachwuchswissenschaftler aus 90 Ländern kamen zusammen, um über die Physik zu reden. Dabei mitmischen durfte auch die Universität Münster, und das in zweierlei Hinsicht: Zum einen gehörten Dr. Mohan M. Garlapati und Dr. Matthias Weiß zum Kreis der eingeladenen und damit ausgezeichneten Wissenschaftstalente. Zum anderen gehörte der Alumnus der Universität Münster und spätere Physiknobelpreisträger (1987), Dr. J. Georg Bednorz, zu den namensgebenden Ehrengästen der Tagung.

Congratulations Farzad!

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farzad Khodabakhshi has successfully applied for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship financed by the European Commission (EC) and will work together with Prof. Gerhard Wilde as scientific host. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of EC promote excellence in research to help build Europe’s capacity for research and innovation by investing in the long-term careers of excellent researchers. Within this highly competitive program, Farzad has secured funding for investigating “Sustainable Hydrogen Storage by Advanced Layered Magnesium‐based Nanostructured Alloys”. With this project, the collaboration between our group and Farzad that started with a highly prestigious Alexander von Humboldt-fellowship for senior scientists and was later on supported by the International Office of University of Münster and by DAAD can be prolonged. We are very happy to host Farzad and to extend our fruitful ongoing collaboration. We wish Farzad all the best and great success with his research project.

Universität bietet gefährdeten Forscherinnen sicheres Umfeld

Die Universität Münster engagiert sich bereits seit langem für gefährdete Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die aufgrund von Verfolgung oder Gewalt nicht mehr in ihren Heimatländern arbeiten können. Die aktuelle Bewerbung der Universität Münster um eine Unterstützung der Philipp Schwartz-Initiative war erneut erfolgreich.

Gefördert werden drei Forscherinnen, eine davon ist Dr. Anna Kornyushchenko. Die Physikerin  arbeitete zuvor als Associate Professor an der Sumy State University und forscht nun am Institut für Materialphysik bei Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wilde.

Infineon-Promotionspreis für Physikerin Shabnam Taheriniya

Absolventin der Universität Münster erhält Auszeichnung für Forschung in der Materialphysik

Die Physikerin Dr. Shabnam Taheriniya hat für ihre exzellente Doktorarbeit an der Universität Münster den mit 2.500 Euro dotierten Infineon-Promotionspreis 2024 erhalten. Während ihrer Dissertation in der Arbeitsgruppe von Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wilde am Institut für Materialphysik untersuchte sie die inneren Grenzflächen in einer neuartigen Materialklasse – den sogenannten Hochentropie-Legierungen. Der Fachbereich Physik der Universität Münster vergibt den Infineon-Promotionspreis jährlich gemeinsam mit der Infineon AG.

„Die Forschungsarbeit von Shabnam Taheriniya hat zu wegweisenden Erkenntnissen über die Struktur und die Wirkung innerer Grenzflächen geführt“, betont ihr Doktorvater Gerhard Wilde. „Diese Erkenntnisse öffnen die Tür, um verbesserte oder sogar neue Materialeigenschaften für verschiedene Anwendungsgebiete zu entwickeln.“

EDISON Young Researcher Award

Sebastian Walfort (PhD student in the group of Prof. Salinga) was awarded the EDISON Young Researcher Award at this year's EDISON conference. Here, participants from all over the world discussed latest progress in the field of fundamental physics and applications of electron dynamics in semiconductors, optoelectronic devices, and nanostructures. The international jury awarded the prize to Sebastian Walfort for his presentation entitled "Correlations in Resistance Fluctuations of Germanium Telluride Glass".

We congratulate him and are excited to see how this research topic will develop further.

Graeme Murch Award

During the recent DSL (Diffusion in Solids and Liquids) Conference hold in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, June 2023, Dr. Mohan Garlapati Muralikrishna (currently Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in AG Wilde) received a prestigious Graeme Murch Award as the highest distinction given by the DSL conference organizers. The award recognizes the contributions of early career scientists (up to 5 years of research experience following Ph. D.) within the field of diffusion research.

With Dr. M. Garlapati, the Award is hold by a researcher associated with our Institute for the second time in a row after the nomination of Dr. Esakkiraja Neelamegan as the first Award holder in 2022. An undisputable success and recognition of the work on atomic diffusion in condensed matter in the Institute of Materials Physics at the University of Münster.

The Award recognizes the ground-breaking research work of Dr. M Garlapati on the elaboration, benchmarking and application of the novel augmented tracer-interdiffusion couple method to different systems from binary Fe-Ga up to B2-ordered multi-principal element alloys. The current research of Dr. M. Garlapati encompasses also various diffusion-based phenomena in a broad spectrum of technologically important materials ranging from metallic alloys to oxides.

We congratulate Dr. Mohan Garlapati Muralikrishna with this prestigious Award and wish him further successes in his carrier!

Die Ausbildung ist geschafft!

Wir gratulieren unserer ehemaligen Auszubildenden Frau Christiane Bahr ganz herzlich zur bestandenen Abschlussprüfung im Feinwerkmechaniker-Handwerk.
 
Die Ausbildung hat Frau Bahr in der Feinmechanischen Werkstatt im Institut für Angewandte Physik begonnen. In 2022  wechselte sie in die Werkstatt des Instituts für Materialphysik und beendete ihre Ausbildung mit Erfolg.

Again: Prof. Gerhard Wilde were honoured as outstanding reviewers 2022 for the journal Acta Materialia.

Graeme Murch Award

During the recent DSL (Diffusion in Solids and Liquids) Conference hold in Florence, Italy, June 2022, Dr. Esakkiraja Neelamegan (currently post-doc by Apl.-Prof. Dr. S. Divinski) has received a prestigious Graeme Murch Award. The Graeme Murch Award was for the first time granted in the 19-year history of the DSL Conferences and it is the highest distinction given by the DSL conference organizers. This award recognizes the contributions of early career scientists (up to 5 years of research experience following Ph. D.) within the wider field of diffusion research.
Dr. Esakkiraja conducted his PhD study at the Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in the research group of Prof. Dr. Aloke Paul (who was a former AvH Fellow at our Institute and worked with Apl.-Prof. Dr. S. Divinski). Dr. Esakkiraja contributed largely to the development of novel pseudo-binary and pseudo-ternary couple methods which have broken the paradigm of interdiffusion in multi-component alloys with the number of components larger than three. He performed a series of fundamental experiments which for the first time provided an access to the quantitative determination of the (pseudo-binary) interdiffusion coefficients in multi-component alloys. Even intrinsic diffusion coefficients were convincingly shown to be accessible via these novel approaches, together with systematic accounting for the vacancy wind factors.
The current research work of Dr. Esakkiraja is directed to the combination of the two fundamental techniques of diffusion studies in the multi-component alloys, i.e. the (radio)tracer and interdiffusion couple methods, in different systems including multi-principal element alloys.
We congratulate Dr. Esakkiraja Neelamegan with this prestigious Award and wish further successes in his carrier!

Double Strike !

Dr. Mohan Muralikrishna Garlapati, Postdoc in AG Wilde, has obtained two exceptional awards: he has received the 2021 „Best Thesis“ award of IIT Madras at Chennai in India for his work on high entropy alloys. Mohan performed a part of his thesis work at our institute, working closely together with Apl.-Prof. Sergiy Divinski. Mohan performed the main part of his thesis work at IIT Madras in the group of Prof. B.S. Murty with whom our group closely collaborates. The thesis award of IIT Madras is a highly prestigious price, since IIT Madras is the top elite institution in the area of materials science and metallurgy in India, making the competition for that award truly fierce. We are very happy that Mohan was selected as awardee this year and we feel that with Mohan, the award has been given to the right person.

Almost at the same time, Mohan has been awarded with a research fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation for 24 months. This fellowship for young scientists from abroad is not only highly prestigious, but also highly competitive. It allows Mohan to work independently on the scientific project that he defined for the application. We are lucky and very happy to have Mohan in our group for the completion of his fellowship project on High Entropy Oxides that will be undertaken in close collaboration with Prof. Horst Hahn from KIT in Karlsruhe, who acts as Co-host of Mohan’s fellowship.
We congratulate Mohan for his great success and we are looking forward to continue working with him.

Watching Atoms Jump

In a paper just published in the reputed journal Advanced Functional Materials, scientists from the Wilde group were able to directly observe and quantitatively measure for the first time the local dynamics of atomic rearrangements at room temperature in an amorphous solid [K. Spangenberg et al.,"Direct View on Non-Equilibrium Heterogeneous Dynamics in Glassy Nanorods", Adv. Funct. Mater. 2021, 31, 2103742; DOI: 10.1002/adfm.202103742]. Such rearrangement processes in glasses contribute significantly to their wide range of applications since they represent the elementary process for the possibility to set material properties. Thereby, the non-crystalline structure of glasses allows property changes (e.g. packing density) which are not possible in the presence of a crystal lattice. To date, however, large gaps exist in understanding the underlying atomic mechanisms of this so-called ‘structural relaxation’. A novel method, which is based on the application of transmission electron microscopy, promises a completely new and direct access.

For this purpose, time series of dark-field images are recorded for application of the so-called electron correlation microscopy. The subsequent analysis of these time series includes calculating the temporal correlation of intensities in the dark-field images.
The resulting decays are fitted by a stretched exponential function (taking into account an ensemble of different activation energies), leading to characteristic fitting parameters - as such, the decay time τ. By analyzing each pixel in the micrograph time series, the material’s typical time and length scales are locally resolved and their spatial distribution is presented in τ(x,y)-maps.

In this research work, which was funded by the German Research Foundation, the dynamics of atomic rearrangement in metallic glass nanowires made of FeNiP are investigated. This fascinating class of material offers ideal prerequisites as a model system for disordered systems. By means of electron correlation microscopy, timescales of the heterogenous dynamics of a glassy FeNiP alloy are locally resolved, revealing a decoupling into two different processes at room temperature. Besides the first quantitative and direct observation of local rearrangements and their characteristic timescale at temperature well below the glass transition, this is an important result for expanding our knowledge of the complex dynamics in materials with disordered atomic structure. An in-depth understanding of these processes and mechanisms opens innovative possibilities for property design of glasses adapted to their respective application.

Dreieinhalb Jahre Ausbildung sind geschafft!

Wir gratulieren unserer ehemaligen Auszubildenden Frau Anja Schneider ganz herzlich zur bestandenen Abschlussprüfung im Feinwerkmechaniker-Handwerk.
 
Durch eine hervorragend abgelegte Prüfung hat Frau Schneider gezeigt, dass sie sich vielfältigen Herausforderungen stellen kann. Sie hat dabei gelernt, knifflige Aufgaben zu lösen, die viel Fingerspitzengefühl verlangen und hat gemeinsam mit jungen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern Geräte gebaut, die für die Grundlagenforschung benötigt werden.

Es freut es uns umso mehr, dass Frau Schneider sich auch nach Ihrer Abschlussprüfung weiter an der Universität Münster engagiert und dass wir mit ihr eine weitere qualifizierte Mitarbeiterin für die WWU ausbilden konnten.

Für den Start als Gesellin wünschen wir ihr alles Gute und weiterhin so viel Spaß in dem Beruf der Feinwerkmechanikerin, wie es während der Ausbildungszeit war.

Dissertationspreis der WWU für Dr. Sven Hilke als Anerkennung für exzellente Forschung in der Materialphysik

Die Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU) hat Dr. Sven Hilke vom Institut für Materialphysik für seine herausragende Forschungsleistung im Rahmen seiner Dissertation in der AG von Prof. Gerhard Wilde mit dem diesjährigen Dissertationspreis ausgezeichnet. Herr Dr. Hilke hat sich im Rahmen seiner von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Dissertation mit fundamentalen Fragestellungen zur Plastizität in metallischen Gläsern befasst. Hier wurden grundlegende Erkenntnisse zum Struktur-Eigenschaftsverhalten amorpher Materie mittels ausgeklügelter transmissionselektronenmikroskopischer Verfahren, die vom Summa-cum-laude-Absolventen größtenteils selbst neuentwickelt wurden, gewonnen. Diese Ergebnisse führten zu konkreten Lösungen aus denen sich praktische Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für diese neuartigen Legierungssysteme ergaben. Mit dieser Auszeichnung erfährt nun eine bemerkenswerte Arbeit ihre Würdigung. Wir gratulieren herzlichst und freuen uns mit dem Preisträger über diese Auszeichnung!

Festkolloquium zu Ehren von Prof. Dr. Helmut Mehrer

Zu Ehren von Prof. Dr. Helmut Mehrer, anlässlich seines 80. Geburtstag, veranstaltete das Institut für Materialphysik am 03.02.2020 ein Festkolloquium.
Herr Prof. Mehrer war von 1984 bis 2005 Direktor des Instituts für Materialphysik (früher: Institut für Metallforschung) der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Während dieser Zeit hat Prof. Mehrer viele wertvolle Beiträge zum atomaren Transport in metallischen, halb- und ionenleitenden Materialien zusammen mit seinen Mitarbeitern geleistet und publiziert.
In Anerkennung seiner Verdienste als Wissenschaftler und Betreuer vieler Abschlussarbeiten lud das Institut für Materialphysik zu diesem Festkolloquium ein. Viele seiner Freunde, Kollegen, Weggefährten sowie Ehemalige des Instituts haben daran teilnehmen können, so dass die Wiedersehensfreude groß war.

Herzlich Willkommen am Institut für Materialphysik

Wir freuen uns sehr, dass Herr Professor Martin Salinga ab dem 1. Dezember 2019 die vakante Professur an unserem Institut übernommen hat. Damit ist unser Institut nun wieder vollständig. Herr Salinga erforscht mit seiner Arbeitsgruppe die Dynamik resisitiv schaltender Materialien und ihrer Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in neuartiger Elektronik. Diese Arbeiten in der Arbeitsgruppe von Herrn Salinga werden durch hochkarätige Formate, zum Beispiel einem „Starting Grant“ des European Research Council (ERC), gefördert. Darüber hinaus ist Herr Salinga externes Mitglied des an der RWTH Aachen angesiedelten SFBs „Nanoswitches“.

Wir wünschen Herrn Salinga und seiner Arbeitsgruppe viel Spaß und Erfolg bei ihren Arbeiten und freuen uns besonders auf viele interessante und spannende fachliche Diskussionen und Zusammenarbeiten.

Berlin: Microscopy Conference 2019 - Poster prize for Katharina Spangenberg

This year the national microscopy conference MC 2019 organized by the German Microscopy Society (DGE) was held in Berlin (September 1-5). Six members from Prof. Wilde’s work group attended the conference to present recent results. Among the poster contributions, Katharina Spangenberg, PhD student was awarded the Best Poster Prize in her category. Katharina is currently working on relaxation and diffusion studies of amorphous materials using electron correlation microscopy (ECM). ECM is relatively new microscopy technique giving access to fast time-dependent processes near or at the glass transition temperature of metallic glasses.

The ISMANAM symposium 2019 held in Chennai, India turned out very successful for the working group of Prof. Wilde. Due to third-party funds, he and six of his PhD students were able to attend this conference, which is the most important annual meeting of scientists, tech-nologists and students working in the field of metastable, nanocrystalline and amorphous materials. Among several interesting talks and discussions, the Münster team was honored for their research contributions: Manoel da Silva Pinto and Sven Hilke were awarded the Best Poster Award in their categories.
Moreover, the prestigious Alain Reza Yavari Award, which is the highest award of the conference series for leading scientists, was awarded to Prof. Wilde for his outstanding scientific contributions as senior researcher in the field of nanocrys-talline and amorphous materials.

Sope of the Symposium

While metallic glasses are disordered systems with rather simple atomic interactions, colloids allow manipulations and observations on the single particle level. Both these material classes present models of disordered systems allowing analyses of structure-property relations and materials’ response upon external excitations with complementing opportunities with the focus on heterogeneous dynamics, shear localization, shear band formation and avalanche dynamics.
The symposium present a unique platform to utilize the complementing generic advantages, control parameters and specific analysis tools available for these two different classes of disordered materials and to approach a unified view concerning the underlying physical mechanisms that lead to system-independent universal behavior of disordered systems with respect to glass relaxation, aging, rejuvenation and shear response.
We expect in-depth discussions during the symposium and collaborations emerging from these discussions will contribute to deepen the understanding of metallic glasses and glass-formation. More information...

Starting Ramp Program

Our PhD student Farnaz Abdollahzadeh Davani was successful in receiving funding for her project 'Impact of micro-alloying on failure and fracture of notched Pd-based glasses' within a Starting Ramp Program for junior scientists.
The project is funded with 5.500 € by the German Science Foundation (DFG - SPP 1594 - Topological Engineering of Ultrastrong Glasses). Congratulations to Ms. Davani for this success!

Best Poster Award

Unser Promovend Sven Hilke hat am 24.08.2017 auf der internationalen Mikroskopie-Konferenz (MC 2017) in Lausanne den Posterpreis der Session „Instrumentation and Methods (IM) 3“ mit dem Poster-Titel „STEM sensitivity for density change detection studied by image simulation“ erhalten.

Finally! – Our new FEI Titan Themis G3 300 is operational making (sub-)atomic resolution materials analysis and characterization available. The new device allows direct imaging of the atomic structure, electron energy loss spectroscopy with high spectral resolution using a monochromator, and elemental mapping of monolayers thanks to a four-quadrant energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer. A fast CMOS camera together with a comprehensive set of special specimen holders enables tracing reactions or transformations as a function of temperature, sample environment, mechanical or electrical attenuation. This exhaustive configuration serves to attain a much more detailed and sound comprehension of elementary processes at the atomic scale that determine macroscopic materials properties.

Am 22. Mai 2017 ist plötzlich und gänzlich unerwartet unser langjähriger Kollege Nicolaas (Nico) Stolwijk verstorben.
Nico war seit dem Jahr 1983 und zuletzt noch über seinen Ruhestand hinaus am Institut für Materialphysik tätig.

Durch seine wissenschaftlich tief schürfende Arbeit, seinen Hang zur Perfektion und seine warmherzige und humorvolle Persönlichkeit hat er das Institut über mehr als drei Jahrzehnte mit getragen und geprägt.

Uns und dem Fachbereich Physik wird Nico immer genau so in bester Erinnerung bleiben.

Prof. Wilde was invited as guest Professor at the Université des Alpes Grenoble and at the Simap Institute of CNRS at Grenoble. Both institutions are ranked as the top institutions for materials science in France. Prof. Wilde was invited as senior principle investigator (PI) and as member of the board of directors of Herbert Gleiter Institute (HGI) at Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST), at Nanjing in China. This invitation includes the opportunity to build a research group at HGI, involving permanent positions for experienced scientists, for post docs and PhD- and Master students as well as a state-of-the-art research environment including a new research building with more than 8000 square meters of laboratory and office space.
The mission of HGI is to bring eastern and western research approaches together, to foster exchange of ideas, methods and personnel and create a research environment that develops out of the best of both approaches. A new perspective for the study of materials

Finally! The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved of the approx. 2.9 Mio Euro proposition for a new state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope. This application, which was guided mainly by AG Wilde, allows for new insights in nearly all research fields of the Institute for Materials Physics as well as the other departments involved in the application: Physics, Chemistry and Geoscience. Recently, the strain field at a shear band in a metallic glass could be determined, for the first time, by combining surface nanostructuring and digital image correlation. This excellent result of the work by Isabelle Binkowski et al. was already published in Applied Physics Letters and was selected as cover for that volume of this renowned journal.

The cover of the Journal of Materials Chemistry C 7 (August 2015) shows the work of Nina Winkler, Martin Peterlechner and Gerhard Wilde. The study focuses highly ordered magnetic arrays of nanowires. Using an amorphous precursor, by diffusion controlled growth it was possible to achieve magnetic layers, with their interfaces perpendicular to the wire axis. The reported approach shows high potential for further research and technical applications. We congratulate Ms. Dr. Winkler to her work and her recently successfully finished thesis.

On July 7th 2015 Prof. Dr. Christian Herzig died after a severe illness at the age of 75 years. Until his retirement in 2004 he was the leader of the radio tracer laboratory at the Institute of Materials Physics at the University of Münster. His main topics were the experimental research of diffusion processes and transposition processes of atoms in pure metalls and several alloys in bulk and boundries. He was using and developing the radioisotope-technique up to its perfection. This technique is therefore still up-to-date.
During his active research he published over 190 scientific reports in journals as well as in contributions to books. His research was financed mostly by diverse third-party grants, mainly by the German Research Foundation.
Christian Herzig has motivated and supervised 43 diploma and 25 doctoral theses.
Through his balanced nature and way to communicate, his curiosity for new phenomena and his deep understanding of physical fundamentals he was a responsible supervisor, highly esteemed colleague and inspired scientists in the complicated field of diffusion research.

Dandan Liu has received her PhD Title

Am 24.05.2015 hat Frau Dandan Liu nach erfolgreicher Verteidigung ihr Promotionsstudium abgeschlossen. Zuvor hat Frau Liu im Rahmen eines Stipendiums der Chinesischen Regierung 1,5 Jahre im Radiotracer-Labor des Instituts für Materialphysik geforscht.

PD Dr. Sergiy Divinski war ein Mitglied der Promotionskommission und hat am Ende der Verteidigung ein T-Shirt mit dem Logo der Universität Münster und den Unterschriften unseren Studenten überreicht.

Best Poster Award at the DPG 2015 in Berlin

Auf der DPG 2015 in Berlin erhielt Jonas Lübke den Best Poster Award für sein Poster "Gas sensor based on metal oxides deposited on AAO for the detection of carbon monoxide".

International Field Emission Society presents renowned award to Dr. Christian Oberdorfer, scientist at the Institute of Materials Science

Bei der vor kurzem in Stuttgart stattgefundenen internationalen Tagung zur Atomsondentomographie und Feldemission (APT&M) wurde Herrn Dr. Christian Oberdorfer, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Materialphysik der Universität Stuttgart, der E. W. Müller Outstanding Young Scientist Award verliehen. Der Preis geht auf den im Jahr 1977 verstorbenen Erfinder der Feldionenmikroskopie, Prof. Dr. Erwin Müller, zurück. Herr Dr. Oberdorfer erhält den Preis für seine bahnbrechenden Ergebnisse zur numerischen Simulation der Feldevaporation, welche an den Universitäten Münster und Stuttgart erarbeitet wurden. Er ist der 29. Preisträger in einer beeindruckenden Reihe von ausgezeichneten Wissenschaftlern. Diese arbeiteten ausnahmslos an namhaften Institutionen, unter anderem an den Universitäten in Cambridge, Göttingen, Oxford, Sendai, und Zürich und nun eben auch in Stuttgart.

Auszeichnung für Prof. Wilde an der Shanghai University

Prof. Gerhard Wilde wurde im Rahmen einer öffentlichen Vorlesung an der Shanghai University das Zertifikat für eine Auszeichnung im Rahmen des „Thousand Talents from Abroad“ -Programms der Region Shanghai überreicht. Innerhalb dieses Programms werden gemeinsame Arbeiten an der Shanghai University für 3 Jahre gefördert.

Die Shanghai University ist eine staatliche Universität mit fast 40.000 Studierenden und einem Schwerpunkt im Bereich der Materialwissenschaften. Verbunden mit dieser Auszeichnung ist auch eine assoziierte Professur an der Shanghai University.

„Advanced Study Group”

Die AG Wilde ist als „Advanced Study Group” des "Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Materials Simulations (ICAMS)” in Bochum ausgewählt worden. Das ICAMS (http://www.icams.de/content/icams_start.html ) ist ein vor wenigen Jahren neu gegründetes Forschungszentrum an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum mit dem Ziel, neue Simulationsansätze und –Werkzeuge zu entwickeln, um die Multiskalenbeschreibung komplexer Materialien zu ermöglichen. Dazu arbeiten vor Ort Wissenschaftler aus den Bereichen Ingenieurswissenschaften, Materialwissenschaft, Chemie, Physik und Mathematik auf dem Gebiet der Simulation zusammen. Die Aufgabe unserer Advanced Study Group „Diffusion and Microstructure Analysis“ ist es, die am ICAMS durchgeführten Multiskalen-Simulationen durch Experimente (insbesondere zur Diffusion und zu Hochauflösungs-TEM-Analysen der Mikrostruktur) zu unterstützen und eng mit den dort zumeist theoretisch arbeitenden Kolleginnen und Kollegen zusammen zu arbeiten.

Landessieger im Ausbildungsberuf Feinwerkmechaniker

Jan Phillip Kiewit hat seine Ausbildung zum Feinwerkmechaniker, die er in der Feinmechanischen Werkstatt des Instituts für Materialphysik bei Frank Spaleck absolvierte mit höchstem Erfolg abgeschlossen.

Herr Kiewit ist nicht nur zum Kammersieger der Handwerkskammer Münster erkoren worden, sondern ist sogar Landessieger im Ausbildungsberuf Feinwerkmechaniker geworden und nimmt nun an dem Wettbewerb auf Bundesebene teil.

Wir freuen uns mit Jan Phillip Kiewit sehr über seinen großen Erfolg und drücken ihm alle vorhandenen Daumen.

Best Poster Award Gold

Der Beitrag von Daria Prokoshkina, Doktorandin von PD Dr. S. Divinski in der AG Wilde, mit dem Titel "Effect of recrystallization on diffusion in ultrafine grained Ni prepared by high pressure torsion" wurde mit dem Goldenen Best Poster Award der DIMAT 2014 Tagung (17.-22. August 2014, Münster) ausgezeichnet. Der Beitrag wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Leonid Klinger und Eugen Rabkin (Technion, Haifa, Israel) und Anna Moros, Gerhard Wilde und Sergiy Divinski aus unserem Institut verfasst und befasst sich mit dem Einfluss von Rekristallisation auf kinetische Eigenschaften der Korngrenzen. Mit eine Reihe gezielter Radiotracerdiffusionsexperimente ist es Daria gelungen, eine signifikant erhörte Diffusionstransportrate der mobilen Korngrenzen, die während ihrer Wanderung einem Fluss von deformationsinduzierten Defekte ausgesetzt sind, zu dokumentieren und mit Hilfe eines neuen mathematischen Modells zu beschreiben. Diese Ergebnisse sind vor kurzem auch in Acta Materialia veröffentlicht worden.
Die Konferenz befasst sich mit dem atomaren und ionischen Transport in festen und weichen Materialien wie Metallen, Halbleitern, Oxiden und Polymeren. Die Themen umfassen die Grundlagen der Diffusion, neuartige Methoden und diffusionskontrollierte Phänomene in der Prozessierung und Herstellung von Materialien. Das Programm besteht aus 125 Vorträgen und 80 Posterbeiträgen, die von 180 Teilnehmern aus etwa 25 Ländern der Welt gehalten bzw. vorgestellt werden. Start der Veranstaltung ist am Sonntag, 17. August, um 16.00 Uhr im Hauptgebäude der Universität, Schlossplatz 2. Ziel der Tagung ist der Austausch von Ideen und Konzepten, die zu einem vertieften Verständnis von Diffusionsvorgängen führen soll, was wiederum die Entwicklung von besseren Materialien in naher Zukunft begünstigt. Die Tagung wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) und vom Internationalisierungsfonds der WWU unterstützt. Das Organisationskomitee bestehend aus Nico Stolwijk (Chairman), Hartmut Bracht, Sergiy Divinski und Guido Schmitz wird von den technischen und administrativen Mitarbeitern des IMP kräftig unterstützt. Außerdem profitiert die DIMAT-2014 ungemein von der engagierten Mitwirkung der vielen Doktorand/inn/en und Studierenden am Institut für Materialphysik.

Spende der Dr. Heinz Dirkes – Stiftung zur Unterstützung einer Masterarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Materialphysik

Zum Ende des Jahres 2013 erhielt das Institut für Materialphysik die frohe Botschaft über eine Spende der Dr. Heinz Dirkes-Stiftung zur Unterstützung einer Masterarbeit an unserem Institut. Wir freuen uns sehr über diese Unterstützung und möchten Herrn Dr. Dirkes unseren besonderen Dank für die Förderung von Nachwuchswissenschaftlern auf unserem Arbeitsgebiet aussprechen.
Herr Dr. Dirkes, der Stiftungsgeber und Vorstand der Stiftung hat 1983 am damaligen Institut für Metallphysik der Universität Münster promoviert und kurz danach das Ingenieursbüro Dirkes in Telgte gegründet, welches er bis heute leitet. Herr Dirkes ist seinem Heimatinstitut und seiner Alma Mater in den vergangenen Jahren eng verbunden geblieben. Wir danken der Dr. Heinz Dirkes-Stiftung herzlich für das große Engagement und wünschen uns auch weiterhin einen so guten Kontakt zu allen Ehemaligen.

Honorary Professorship

Prof. Gerhard Wilde wurde eine Ehrenprofessur an der North-Eastern University in Shenyang, China verliehen. Diese Auszeichung erfolgte in Anerkennung der intensiven und fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Nukleation und der Kinetik von Phasenumwandlungen.

Momentan läuft ein gemeinsames Projekt von Prof. Wilde und Prof. Jianrong Gao, welches von der DFG und der NSFC gefördert wird und auch den Austausch von Studenten beinhaltet. Darüber hinaus arbeitet zurzeit Dr. Yikun Zhang im Rahmen ihres Alexander von Humboldt-Forschungsstipendiums an unserem Institut.
