The Seismology group owns 20 Trillium120P instruments with Taurus data loggers, 4 Trillium compacts with Taurus data loggers and one rotational seismometer (IXblue) with data logger. In addition, we host 1/4 of the DSEBRA instrument pool in Münster.

From autumn 2023 we will also have another 8 seismometers for use in teaching (which will be deployed at the University) to teach how to work in an obervatory.

We also run, together with theErdbebendienst des Bundes (EdB) (at the BGR) the seismic station KAST, which is located in the region of Sauerland (Altes Forsthaus Rehsiepen)

  • Morocco-Münster Array

In Cooperation with the Moroccan University of Rabat and University of Bristol: setup and operation of a temporal network of seismic station in the High- and Anti-Atlas in Morocco.

From November 2010 to April 2013, the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Münster has installed an array of seismic stations in south-western Morocco and northern Spain as extension of the ongoing PICASSO and IBERARRAY projects. Fifteen stations cover the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains (plus four stations in the Pyrenees) and allow investigation of events especially from South America and the Pacific to study three different regions in the deep Earth in order to better understand the dynamical, mineralogical, and evolutionary processes of the Earth’s mantle. In 2012, the University of Bristol, U.K., installed another 7 stations South of the Münster stations

  • Azores deployment

To study uplift of the Azores, three stations were deployed from July 2011- to June 2012 in collaboration with the University of Bristol, U.K. (George Helffrich and Ricardo Ramalho). The data from station PSPRB are used in the pu blication by Spieker et al., 2014, Geophys. J. Int., 198, 1474–1485

  • RHUM-RUM deployment

As part of the RHUM-RUM (Réunion Hotspot and Upper Mantle - Réunions Unterer Mantel) project (funded by DFG and ANR), we installed four of our seismometers on the island of La Réunion. The stations stayed for 2 years and contributed to the main land station dataset of RHUM-RUM. RHUM-RUM is a French-German passive seismic experiment designed to image an oceanic mantle plume – or lack of plume – from crust to core beneath La Réunion Island, and to understand these results in terms of material,

  • Alp-Array

We are part of the Alp-Array initiative to deploy a dense seismic network across the Alps and surrounding areas. Initially we deployed 10 stations as part of the UNIBRA contribution to ALP array, we also host 25 stations of the DSEBRA pool. For more information see:

  • DICTUM (U. Twente)

In collaboration with the University Twente (Enschede. NL) we have several seismometers deployed in the Netherlands. Dr I. Fadel is the PI of this project. For more information see the DICTUM web site.

  • Deploment in DESY (with UHH)

As part of the 3rd Generation Gravitational Wave Telescope we have deployed 11 seismometers and one rotational seismometer at the DESY site in Hamburg, in collaboration with partners at DESY and UHH, who also deployed a number of stations.

More information will appear here when we collect data.

  • GRSN station KAST

The station KAST (Kahler Asten, Hochsauerland, near Altes Forsthaus Rehsiepen) is part of the German Regional Seismic Network (GRSN). We deployed this station together with the BGR (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe). For more information go to the  BGR Web site
