Navigating Careers After the PhD Studies

Alumni Day 2025 Gave Impulses for Professional Future

Career paths after a PhD are diverse: ranging from staying in academia to moving into industry or launching a start-up. The ECS Alumni Day 2025, organized by the ECS Student Chapter Münster in cooperation with MEET Battery Research Center, the International Research School BACCARA and Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS), put these opportunities and their associated challenges center stage. Current and former colleagues came together to share experiences, expand their networks and gain concrete ideas for their next career steps.

“The choice of what to do after the PhD is rarely straightforward, especially given the currently challenging situation in the automotive and chemical industries. Our annual ECS Alumni Day is a great opportunity to explore career options and gain practical advice from former MEET and HI MS doctoral researchers,” said Dominik Weintz, President of the ECS Student Chapter Münster.

The program opened with Dr Christian Krause outlining career prospects at a Japanese chemical company. Former MEET Director Dr Gerhard Hörpel then reflected on lithium ion battery materials development in the industry in the 1990s and early 2000s as well as tracing the beginnings and early challenges of MEET Battery Research Center. After a short coffee break, Dr Richard Schmuch highlighted the attractive career pathways in research, followed by Dr Bastian Heidrich, who offered insights into workplace culture and current challenges at a European cell manufacturer. A panel discussion gave participants the chance to put their questions to the speakers.

Networking opportunities like the  ECS Alumni Day are invaluable for doctoral researchers and graduates alike as they enable early contacts with potential employers, broaden horizons, and make the variety of possible career routes visible – crucial ingredients for informed career planning.
