Information for students from other disciplines

Our department also allows students from other disciplines to apply for an Erasmus place. However, this is only possible for any remaining places that are not allocated in the first round of applications. These will be published in due course (one week before the application period begins) under News (Aktuelles) on the list of remaining places and will be available for application from the beginning of March (exact date to follow). This allows sufficient time to write the application.

Who is considered to be from a different subject area?

Students whose degree programme is not assigned to Department 14 are considered to be from a different subject area. Teacher training and other dual-subject students are not considered to be from a different subject area if one of their subjects belongs to Department 14. Primary school teacher training students are also considered to be from a different subject area.

What special considerations must be taken into account when applying as a non-specialist?

The principle of first come, first served applies to the allocation of remaining places: as soon as the list of remaining places is published (usually at the beginning of March), applications (provided they are complete) are prioritised according to the date/time of receipt and places are allocated accordingly. The application deadline for a stay abroad in the winter semester 2026/27, the entire academic year 2026/27 or the summer semester 2027 is 15 April 2026.

Students from other disciplines should make sure to find out in advance about the courses offered by the respective partner university, as at least half of the courses must be taken at the partner institution and may need to be passed. If you wish to have the courses credited in Münster, you should therefore check the course offerings in detail and discuss them with the study coordinators.

We cannot guarantee Erasmus places for students from other disciplines. We are happy to nominate suitable students from other disciplines to our partner universities, but they are free to reject the nominations or impose special conditions. Whether applications from students from other disciplines are possible can be clarified before applying, if necessary. The list of remaining places also includes comments on whether it is already known that students from other disciplines will be accepted. If it says ‘unknown’, please take the initiative and ask the partner universities yourself.

Most partner universities require that at least 2 courses and 50% of the courses taken abroad be taken at the institutes or departments covered by the partner agreement. Students from other disciplines may therefore have to complete 50% of their courses in the field of geosciences, i.e. disciplines such as geography, landscape ecology or geosciences. But you're sure to find some very exciting courses there :)

The documents listed here are required (including a letter of motivation!). The letter of motivation should also explain why you were unable to find a placement within your own subject area.
