Theology: Biographical – Contextual – Intersectional

© Aschendorff Verlag

In many societies, awareness of diversity has grown, not least thanks to the struggles for recognition and against gender, sexual, racial, and ethnic discrimination. At the same time, exclusionary and discriminatory tendencies are also on the rise again. Christian theology has a responsibility to act and position itself responsibly in this regard. An international symposium on the topic of “Theology: Biographical – Contextual – Intersectional” held on October 20–21, 2022, organized by the Centre for Theological Gender Studies at the Catholic Faculty of Theology in Münster, addressed this concern. This volume documents the contributions and results of the conference, in particular different modes and conditions for receiving intersectionality theologically and making it fruitful for theological thinking. The contributions in the volume include both (auto)biographical approaches from different geographical, cultural, and religious contexts (including West Africa and the Philippines) as well as theoretical reflections on the theological appropriation of intersectionality. Furthermore, they offer approaches for the further development of theological intersectionality research and for an in-depth examination of its methodological and hermeneutical prerequisites.

Gender (Studies) in Theology: Foundations and Perspectives

© Aschendorff Verlag

Feminist and gender perspectives have become increasingly established in theological research. Nevertheless, they are often still understood as a supplementary special discourse distinct from ‘essential’ theological topics. However, theological gender research is an interdisciplinary field that addresses gender in all theological disciplines and in ecumenical cooperation. This is demonstrated by this book, which brings together contributions to theological gender research from German-language Christian theological academic discourse in order to ascertain its status quo, identify desiderata, and explore emerging topics and starting points for further research. From their respective disciplinary perspectives, the contributions seek to approach questions concerning the foundations and perspectives of theological gender studies. First, the significance of gender studies for subjects such as exegesis, church history, liturgical studies, and many more is illustrated with the help of concrete examples. Additionally, the book analyses the effects of social gender norms in relation to recognition and gender reflects upon identities in educational contexts. The book concludes with potential developments in theological gender research by incorporating critical perspectives from feminist theology, theological explorations, and discourses that have received little attention to date, such as British queer theological approaches or intersectionality.
