Student assistants at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

Each semester, the Department employs approximately 140 students as teaching assistants for lectures, pre-courses, internships, etc. Below we have summarised the most important information about requirements, tasks and recruitment. If you have a contract that continues into the next semester, please check with your department whether you need to apply for a teaching position for the following semester via the applicant portal.

We are looking forward to applications from committed students from the 4th semester onwards with a good understanding of the lecture material - in exceptional cases also from students from the 2nd semester onwards. • General Information

    Tasks of the tutors:

The tutors should lead and supervise the weekly small group tutorials during the lecture period. In the tutorial groups, the solutions to the exercises are usually discussed, questions on the current topics of the lecture are answered and important terms and sentences from the lecture are discussed. Regular correction of homework is also part of the programme.

    Your benefits:

The benefits of becoming a tutorial assistant are numerous. As a tutorial group leader, you are employed and paid by the university. In addition, as an exercise group leader, you deal intensively with the content of the corresponding lecture. This allows you to develop a deeper understanding of the topics both through the discussions in the exercise group and by correcting the exercises. As the material covered in the beginners' lectures is particularly important for further lectures and examinations, you also benefit from this activity in your own studies. Additionally, the role provides opportunities to develop public speaking skills and the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise manner. These abilities are highly sought after in a variety of professional contexts. Furthermore, the experience can be directly applied to one's own academic pursuits.

    Our expectations:

Above all, it is expected that the tutors will have a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter of the lecture they are supervising. Ideally, they will also demonstrate enthusiasm for the content and a willingness to address any comprehension difficulties that students may have.

    Eligibility for credit: tba

    Application stages:

The application phase for the subsequent semester is typically scheduled to commence in the latter half of the lecture period (typically in December or June). Further information on the formal requirements and remuneration can be found in the relevant announcements on the departmental websites or on the notice boards in the institutes.
