Felienne Hermans (Leiden): How to teach programming and other things (Raumänderung! - SRZ213)

Tuesday, 20.11.2018 14:00 im Raum SRZ 213

Mathematik und Informatik

Prof. Dr. Felienne Hermans, Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, Leiden University, NL.

Abstract: Most programmers teach, whether they like it or not. Teaching their kids programming, teaching junior developers about their code base, teaching themselves about new frameworks. And yet most developers know little about teaching. How do people learn? How to best teach? Is teaching programming different from teaching other things? This talk will help you be a better teacher and learner.
Bio: Felienne is associate professor at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science at Leiden University, where she heads a research group on programming education. What cognitive skills are needed for programming? What misconceptions can occur when children are learning to program? These are some of the questions that intrigue Felienne.
On Saturdays she teaching children programming in a local community center. She was also one of the founders of the Joy of Coding conference, which she organized for 6 years. Since 2016, she is a host at SE radio, one of the most popular software engineering podcasts on the web.
