Rotation numbers classify orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the circle (hence actions of the integers) up to semiconjugacy. After recalling the classical theory, we will show how one can generalize the notion of rotation number both to actions of groups larger than the integers and to actions on manifolds more complicated than the circle. As an application, we will illustrate some rigidity results.
