Short abstract: The first part of this colloquium talk will recall the basic problems in the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves, some of which date back to antiquity, and state in elementary terms the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. The second part will be devoted to reviewing the known results on this conjecture, including some stemming from ongoing research.
