Programmed DNA elimination (PDE) involves the excision of specific DNA sequences during the development of many unicellular and multicellular species. Ciliated protozoa are excellent systems for studying PDE’s mechanistic basis and evolutionary significance. This project will provide insights into the intracellular forces that drive PDE in the ciliate Paramecium. It will also examine the role that this molecular process may have in facilitating adaptations to environmental changes.
