    Monday 23rd March 2026: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

    Wednesday 25th March 2026: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

    On Monday 30th March 2026 the Department opens only from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The Library at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology

The department’s library presently has about 35.000 printed books and 26 periodicals. The regional specialisations of the library are South and Southeast Asia as well as Africa. Moreover, this library is well equipped with books. They are arranged according to different subjects and areas of study such as “Social Organization” “Structural Anthropology” “Anthropology of Arts”, “Medical Anthropology/Transcultural Psychaitry”, “Anthropology of Religion”, “Theories and Methods of Social/Cultural Anthropology” as well as general themes in the discipline. Since 2000 the library has been furnished with some accessories. The reading room provides enough workspace for researchers and readers.

  • 1. User regulations for the library of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology

    • Bags, Jackets and other portable items should be deposited in lockers found in the cellar.
    • Books are to be reshelved only by the library staff. Users are required to return books that are no longer needed either to the staff, or to place them on the mantelshelf near the reading area.
    • Books needed for longer periods could be deposited on the tables in the reading area. Please make sure to tag these books with the user’s name and date.
    • Neither eating nor drinking and smoking are allowed in the library.
    • Absolute silence is not required. But please keep noise to a minimum in the reading areas to avoid disturbing other library users. Please switch off all mobile phones. Please inform the reception if any group wants to have short discussions concerning paper presentations, so that a suitable place for the discussions may be found.
  • 2. Borrowing Conditions

    • Books may be borrowed: 4 weeks loan period, extension for another 4 weeks possible via phone or in person (and in this case, the shelf marks should be stated).
    • Users are generally not allowed to borrow more than 5 books at a time.
    • In all other matters, the terms of use of the University and State Library of Münster apply.
  • 3. Library Structure and Composition

    The library is structured in such a way that all items are divided according to shelf marks composed of the following:

    Periodicals are sorted according to Regions and alphabetical order of titles. They are found in the last two rooms of the library.

    The shelfmarks-key is found in the purple folder found in the reading room.

    Users wishing to make enquiries about a particular material should use the Users’ PC and the author catalogue found in the reading room.
