Abstract

Since ancient times, the lion has been closely associated with the sun star in the coinage of Miletus. From the late classical period onwards, this combination became the characteristic image on the reverse side of the polis. It is therefore hardly surprising that a type of Hellenistic bronze coin was mostly attributed to Miletus. However, Imhoof-Blumer had already expressed doubts about this. Instead, he suggested the polis of Aigiale on the Cycladic island of Amorgos as the mint. In this article, the respective arguments will be presented and weighed against each other.
