Technology exerts a profound influence on the scope for action, self-understanding and self-relationship of individuals, as well as the dynamics, positional structures and patterns of normality in societies. This constellation can be analysed as technocracy which manifests itself in two ideal-typical forms. On the one hand, self-dynamic socio-technical developments confront the individual. The problems of “imperfect technology”, which result from a lack of social and ecological integration, manifest themselves as side effects of normal operation. On the other hand, there is the deliberate exercise of power by specific actors. Key problem areas in the digital economy are being investigated. All in all, socio-technical development reveals a new form of self-endangerment in modern society.
