Synopsis

The rapid growth of scientific data poses considerable challenges for researchers, as it requires programming skills and access to modern hardware. Therefore, well-structured relational databases are essential for modern scientific studies. The challenges of a study on upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in cancer patients illustrated the need of a centralized uORF database to conduct large-scale screenings. Thus, the former literature database uORFdb was expanded to include sequences of uORFs and potential cancer-associated variants. In a second project, MetagenomicsDB was developed to facilitate the data management of individual longitudinal microbiome studies. The system ensures the integrity of the collected data in multi-user environments and facilitates their analyses. Both databases do not require in-depth bioinformatics knowledge for their operation and thus contribute to making scientific analyses available to all researchers.
