Crises and Conflicts

The journey towards a doctoral degree and into academic life is not easy. Crises are normal in the course of a doctoral or research process. It is usually easier if you are networked with other doctoral researchers or postdocs, because other people experience challenges similar to yours. Crises also have an important function: they often represent the tipping points at which conscious decisions determine the further course of a project or ring in a new phase in the research process.

Taking new paths has a definite attraction. But the idea that you have to do so all alone is a myth, it is unrealistic, and it goes against the spirit of research. Researchers who proceed hand in hand and deal openly with weaknesses are strong, and they support the academic system.

Crises can be caused by – or can themselves cause – conflicts. It is precisely when interpersonal conflicts play a role that it can be difficult to find solutions and ways out of the crisis. Seeking advice at an early stage, and in confidence, is often a good idea. At the University of Münster there are many people you can contact, each specialising in a different field. If you experience crises or conflicts in relation to your doctoral research or in your postdoc phase, do feel free to talk to us.

Are you feeling stress resulting from conflicts (for example, in your working group or with a supervisor)? Do you find yourself in a crisis which is blocking your research process? Do contact us to arrange an appointment for us to talk (about 60 minutes). The advisory session takes place in confidence and is free of charge to members of the University.

We will listen to your concerns! We will help you to analyse your personal situation. And we will offer ideas on how to find a solution that is suitable for you.

People’s experiences

In collaboration with the Klaus Tschira Foundation, the newspaper Die Zeit regularly publishes a Guidebook on Doctoral Degrees. It contains not only tips on entering the world of research, but also plenty of interviews with people who are undertaking, or have completed, a doctoral degree, along with reports on experiences they have had and all the hurdles they have encountered.
