DAAD Doctoral Scholarships in Germany for full PhD or for Cotutelle/Sandwich Models

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) opened a new round of funding for outstanding early-career researchers intending to undertake a doctorate in Germany.
A doctoral project may be carried out fully in Germany or via a binational arrangement involving periods of study in both Germany and the applicant's home country. The binational option comes in two forms: the sandwich model, in which the degree is conferred by the home university, and the cotutelle model, which results in a joint degree awarded by both institutions.
Applications can be submitted until 3 September 2026 at 23:59 CEST (18:59 BRT). The funding period starts in October 2027.
To be eligible, applicants need a university degree obtained no longer than six years before the deadline. Those who have already begun their doctorate must have started it within the past three years. Anyone who has resided in Germany for more than 15 months as of the deadline cannot apply. In addition, proficiency in either German or English is required.
