    • Campus Earth Day, University of Münster
      On November 14, the Interreg NWE projects PREWAPHARM and ECOPRO were presented by Sarah Peschkes, Dr. Julia Wessel, and Dr. Johannes Holert as part of the Campus Earth Day at the University of Münster. The projects were discussed with citizens, students, and other interested parties.
    • Conference "Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Religious, Political, and Ecological Boundaries"
      On November 7, Bodo Philipp, Doris Fuchs, and Tilmann Buttschardt gave a lecture on "Boundaries as a Condition for Future Viability". The conference was organized by the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics" at the University of Münster. More information can be found here.
    • Consortium Meeting of the Interreg Project PREWAPHARM and Aquarama Water Technology Fair 
      On October 22, the PREWAPHARM project partners met in Leuven, Belgium, to discuss the project's progress. On October 23, Dr. Johannes Holert and Prof. Thorsten Kuczius participated in a PREWAPHARM matchmaking event at the Aquarama Water Technology Fair.
    • Industry Day Netzwerk Oberfläche NRW (NRWO)
      On September 23, Dr. Julia Wessel and Dr. Johannes Holert attended the industry day in Emsdetten on the topic "Digitization in Plastics and Surface Technology" and presented the Interreg NWE project PREWAPHARM. NRWO
    • ECOPRO Final Project Meeting
      On June 12, the final meeting of the Interreg NWE project ECOPRO took place in Athlone, Ireland. Together with the project partners, the results were presented and discussed. More information can be found here.
    • Conference "Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Growth in the Context of Sustainability" 
      On May 12 and 13, a conference was held at the Franz-Hitze-Haus (FHH) in Münster, organized by Prof. Doris Fuchs (University of Münster, RIFS Potsdam), Prof. Bodo Philipp (University of Münster), and Dr. Christian Müller (FHH). Discussions included questions such as: What does sustainable growth look like? What alternatives are there? What can we learn from different disciplines? More information can be found here.
    • Official Kick-Off and Consortium Meeting of the Interreg NWE Project PREWAPHARM
      On April 23 and 24, 2024, a consortium meeting was held in Groningen and the official kick-off for the Interreg NWE project PREWAPHARM took place in Assen, in which the working groups of Philipp (IMMB) and Kuczius (UKM) participated. At the consortium meeting, Dr. Johannes Holert and Prof. Bodo Philipp discussed possibilities for keeping pharmaceuticals out of our water or removing them again with the other project partners.     • ZIN Salon Water: Resource Water - From Habitat to Critical Infrastructure to Distribution Justice
      On April 10, the research salon organized by the Center for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research (ZIN) and the Philipp working group took place at the University of Münster. ZIN scientists Prof. Dr. Bodo Philipp and Dr. Tobias Gumbert, as well as other experts, contributed to the topic of water. Dr. Julia Wessel and Dr. Johannes Holert presented the two Interreg NWE projects PREWAPHARM and ECOPRO. More information can be found here.

    • Radio Interview with Bodo Philipp: "Bacteria Can Help Break Down Plastic"
      On November 29, Professor Bodo Philipp spoke on Deutschlandfunk about the low recycling rate of plastics and ways to accelerate their breakdown. The role of microorganisms was also discussed. Interview DLF

      On November 8, the third Campus Earth Day took place under the motto "With AI on the Way to a Sustainable Future" at the Geomuseum Münster. Dr. Julia Wessel presented the results of the Interreg NWE projects ECOPRO and CurCol and discussed them with citizens, students, and other interested parties. Campus Earth Day
    • Consortium Meeting of the Interreg NWE Project ECOPRO
      On October 24, the project partners met in Münster to discuss the project's progress and goals for the final phase. The meeting was organized by Professor Bodo Philipp and Dr. Julia Wessel, who also presented the project results.
    • Participation in the NRW Day, Cologne
      On August 17 and 18, the NRW Day took place in Cologne under the motto "Together Connected - Generation NRW!". Dr. Julia Wessel presented the projects ECOPRO and CurCol at the stand of the EFRE/JTF program of the Ministry of Economics, Industry, Climate Protection, and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia.
    • "Sustainability @ University of Münster" as Part of the Ulysseus Days
      From October 28 to 30, the Ulysseus Days took place in Münster under the title "Navigating Pathways to a Sustainable Future". ZIN member Michael Quante presented the sustainability strategy of the University of Münster before providing insights into the fields of education, research, transfer, and governance together with Bodo Philipp, Rebecca Froese, and Sigrid Kannengießer.
    • "Compost Festival", City Laboratory of the University of Münster
      From June 10 to 15, the Compost Festival took place for the third time in the cultural quarter of Münster. Professor Bodo Philipp offered microscopic insights into the world of microbes and bacteria through a lecture and workshop. Dr. Julia Wessel presented the results of the Interreg NWE project ECOPRO in the form of a poster.
    • ECOPRO Kick-Off Meeting and TUS Engineering Expo 
      On April 24, the partners of the Interreg NWE project met at the lead partner in Athlone, Ireland. Dr. Julia Wessel presented the tasks of the University of Münster in a lecture. Afterwards, the TUS Engineering Expo and the production halls of the cooperation company DeltaQ were visited. ECOPRO
    • Interview "Are There Bacteria That Eat Plastic?" in "Ask Sophie" 
      In the theme issue on sustainability of "Ask Sophie!", Dr. Yulduzkhon Abdullaeva, Dr. Julia Wessel, Dr. Johannes Holert, and Professor Bodo Philipp answered questions about how bacteria could help reduce waste. Here is the link to the issue.

    • "Kreislauf Dinner" as part of the Compost Festival
      On June 17, 2023, the "Cycle Dinner" took place at the vhs-Forum, marking the start of this year's Compost Festival organized by the City Laboratory of the Department of Geosciences at the University of Münster. The experimental event was jointly organized by the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZIN), the City Laboratory, the vhs Münster, and fairteilbar. ZIN member Prof. Dr. Bodo Philipp and media artist Ella von der Haide highlighted the microbiome as an essential element of compost.
    • Presentation of the CurCol project at the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Climate Protection, and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia
      On May 25, Prof. Bodo Philipp, Dr. Julia Wessel, and master's student Franziska Gorecki presented the Interreg NWE project CurCol in the foyer of the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Climate Protection, and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf.
    • Introduction to the Citizen Science project "KompoBioPlast@Home?"
      The kick-off event for the Citizen Science project "KompoBioPlast@Home?" will take place on March 31. Starting at 5 pm, interested parties can learn about the project, which deals with the degradation of bioplastics in home composting, at the IMMB (Corrensstraße 3). Questions and registrations can be sent by email to bioplast@uni-muenster.de.
    • Lecture at the International Bioeconomy Conference 
      On February 22-23, the international bioeconomy conference "Bioeconomy Policies, Actors, and Transformations: Achievements, Challenges, and Recommendations" took place at Humboldt University in Berlin. BIOCIVIS employees Wiebke Walleck and Victoria Hasenkamp presented their lecture "Participation in the bioeconomy: How to involve citizens in the discussion on complex technological issues?" and introduced the BIOCIVIS project and its central results.
    • Final Event of the "CURCOL - Recent Developments in Curcumin-Based Colorants" project 
      As part of the final event of the CurCol project, Prof. Bodo Philipp and Dr. Julia Wessel offered a workshop on "Biodegradation of the natural colorant curcumin and its derivatives" in Breda, Netherlands, on February 2, 2023.
    • Final Conference of the BIOCIVIS project 
      The final conference of the interdisciplinary ZIN research project BIOCIVIS took place on January 17, 2023, at the Akademie Franz Hitze-Haus in Münster. The focus of the conference was the presentation and discussion of the project results. More information can be found here.

    • Poster Presentation at the Surface Technology Industry Day
      As part of the Surface Technology Industry Day organized by Netzwerk Oberfläche NRW (NRWO), held under the title "Sustainable Handling of Materials" on November 10, 2022, in Greven, Dr. Julia Wessel, Elisabeth Theodoropoulos, and Wiebke Walleck presented the CurCol and KompoBioPlast@Home? projects in poster form to establish contacts with economic partners.
    • Online Consortium Meeting of the CurCol Project
      On November 24, the semi-annual consortium meeting of the Interreg Northwest Europe project CurCol took place. Together with all project partners, Prof. Bodo Philipp and Dr. Julia Wessel discussed the results and planned the final phase of the project, which ends in March 2023.
    • Lecture Series REACH for Sustainability
      As part of the REACH for Sustainability lecture series of the REACH-Euregio Start-up Center, Prof. Bodo Philipp gave a lecture on "On the Way to Bio-Economy: Learning from Biology?" on November 3, 2022, and introduced the concept of bio-economy to interested listeners.
    • Activities at the Science Festival SCHLAURAUM
      On the occasion of the science festival SCHLAURAUM (a cooperation between the University of Münster, the University of Applied Sciences, and the city of Münster), the Philipp working group informed visitors about the importance of microorganisms for our drinking water and wastewater treatment. On June 21, 2022, Prof. Bodo Philipp presented the ambivalent roles of microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants and waterworks in the OpenAir Lecture Hall in Stubengasse. On June 23 and 24, the BIOCIVIS project was represented with a booth on microbial wastewater treatment.
    • Consortium Meeting of the CurCol Project in Ghent
      After almost two years of project duration, it was possible for the first time this year for all project partners of the Interreg Northwest Europe project CurCol to meet in Ghent, Belgium, on June 16, 2022. Prof. Bodo Philipp and Dr. Julia Wessel visited the turmeric cultivation by the company PCG in Kruishoutem and the production and dyeing of bioplastics by the company Centexbel from Kortrijk. Results from all project partners were also presented, and the further course of the project and additional project ideas for the use of curcumin as a natural dye were discussed in a subsequent discussion.
    • Science Slam on Sustainability
      The House of Science in Braunschweig hosted a Science Slam on June 22, 2022, as part of the Sustainability Day TUmorrow Day. Wiebke Walleck participated with a slam about the BIOCIVIS research project.
    • Lecture at the Compost Festival 
      Prof. Bodo Philipp and master's student Elisabeth Theodoropoulos presented the microbial basics of composting on June 18, 2022, as part of the Compost Festival, which was organized by the Urban Laboratory Münster.
    • Lecture at the CurCol Webinar
      In the webinar "Recent developments in curcumin-based colorants and applications" on May 17, 2022, Prof. Bodo Philipp and Dr. Julia Wessel presented the latest results on the biodegradability of curcumin as a natural dye, which were achieved in the interdisciplinary Interreg Northwest Europe project CurCol.
    • Dialogue Event of the Interdisciplinary Research Project BIOCIVIS
      From May 12 to 14, 2022, the third dialogue event on citizen participation in the bio-economy took place in the Capuchin monastery in Münster as part of the BIOCIVIS project.     • Comic on Bioeconomy with Participation of the BIOCIVIS Project
      In November 2021, a comic from the series "Ask Sophie!" was published, which was designed by the BIOCIVIS project in collaboration with the Münster Waste Management Company (AWM) and the Research Transfer Office (AFO, WWU Münster). The comic, which appeared in the Westfälische Nachrichten and on the website of the "Ask Sophie!" project, answered the question: "What does our organic waste have to do with our future?"
    • BIOCIVIS: Second Dialogue Event
      The second "Biodialog" of the BIOCIVIS project took place on August 20-21, 2021, in person and against the colorful backdrop of the WWU Botanical Garden. A review of the event, which focused on citizen participation, bioeconomy, and sustainability, can be found on the homepage of the Biodialogs.
    • BIOCIVIS at the Digital Science Slam
      At the digital Science Slam in the 2020/21 Science Year on July 14, 2022, Wiebke Walleck presented the BIOCIVIS research project. The event was organized by the House of Science in Braunschweig, and the YouTube live stream can be accessed here.

      The project team is researching citizen participation in decision-making processes in the bioeconomy. The first dialogue event of the BIOCIVIS research project on the topics of bioeconomy and sustainability took place as a digital event on May 28-29, 2021.     • Interdisciplinary Summer School "Aspects of Bioeconomy" Wins Ideas@REACH 2020/2021 Competition
      An innovative teaching format, developed in cooperation with the Plant Biotechnology Working Group (Prof. Dr. Dirk Prüfer), will be offered for the first time in the summer semester 2021 as an advanced module for M.Sc. students in the Department of Biology (more information in the module handbook). Due to its contribution to founding culture, the teaching format is being funded by the REACH EUREGIO Start-up Center as part of the Ideas@REACH 2020/2021 competition.
