The East Pediment

In keeping with the location of the Olympic Games, the east gable depicts a chariot race, which played a central role in the Olympic competitions. It tells the story of the race between Pelops, who wanted to marry the beautiful Hippodameia, and her father Oinomaos, who wanted to prevent this and challenged Pelops to a chariot race for the young woman's hand. The arrangement of the figures is still disputed today, as the fragments were found scattered.
