In order to celebrate its 10th anniversary the Institute for Cypriot Studies had invited scholars from Germany, France, the Netherlands and Cyprus for an interdisciplinary conference in Muenster in October 2006. The conference's topic was "Cyprus and the Near East in the 19th Century – Political and Scientific Interests of the European States in the Levant" – a topic which provided ample space for scientific discussion. Starting from the Oriental Question with all its involved key players special stress was laid on the question, how the Near East and Cyprus was perceived in 19th century Europe, and how the different European states were involved in the more or less illicit excavations in Cyprus and the Levant – excavations which were most doubtful with regard to scientific demands.
