Study

Our courses cover a wide range of topics from educational and developmental psychology. These include, for example, courses on psychological findings on motivation in the classroom, on the promotion of emotion regulation strategies and on the development of emotions and their interaction with performance at school.

In our courses, we particularly focus on providing students with sound basic knowledge on the basis of which they can understand, interpret and classify current research findings. Our aim is to enable students to find out which theories are not only correct or empirically sound, but also to what extent these theories are promising in their implementation and application and how they can use them profitably in their own professional practice.

  • Bachelor

General information on the educational sciences in the Bachelor of Arts/Science can be found here.

    Modul LESD

The LESD module is a compulsory module in educational science. It serves as an introduction to the diagnosis and promotion of basic psychological processes in the areas of learning, development and social processes.

The module consists of the introductory lecture “Introduction to basic psychological processes relevant to teaching, diagnosis and support” and an in-depth seminar that builds on the lecture. The lecture and the in-depth seminar are each completed with an examination, each of which counts for 50% of the module grade.

We offer in-depth seminars for primary and secondary schools on the topics of motivation, emotions and their regulation in the context of learning and performance.

You can find all current in-depth seminars here and in the online course catalog HISLSF.

  • Master

General information on the educational sciences in the Master of Education can be found here.

    Modul LES

The LES module is a compulsory elective module in educational science. It focuses on various basic psychological processes, focusing on those development and learning processes that relate to the behavior, cognition, motivation, emotion, thinking and memory of young people. Based on these developmental and learning processes, conclusions can be drawn about learning and teaching at school.

The LES module consists of a lecture (4 SWS) and a seminar (2 SWS).

In the LES module, we offer in-depth seminars on the topics of motivation, emotions and their regulation in the context of learning and performance. Furthermore, in our courses we always encourage students to consider how the approaches developed can be implemented in school practice.

    Modul LES-FA

The LES-FA module is a compulsory elective module in educational science. It is used to teach selected research and (school) application-related topics in the areas of learning (learning behavior, cognitive teaching-learning processes, motivation and emotion), childhood development (development of learning, memory, thinking, motivation and emotion) and social processes (interaction and communication in learning and teaching).

Depending on the degree program, the module consists of a lecture and one or two in-depth seminars. The prerequisite for the module is the successful completion of the LESD module or the LES module.

In the LES-FA module, we offer in-depth seminars on the topics of motivation, emotions and their regulation in the context of learning and performance. The analysis and qualitative assessment of pedagogical-psychological research findings as well as considerations on how these findings can be applied in everyday school life are always of great importance. As in our other courses, the focus is on identifying generally applicable principles and measures so that students from all degree programs and subject combinations can benefit from the courses.

You can find all current in-depth seminars here and in the online course catalog HISLSF.

  • Internship Semester

General information on the practical semester in the Master of Education can be found here.

In the Master of Education, all students complete an internship semester worth 25 credit points. The educational science supervision for the internship semester is the responsibility of the Education and the Psychology departments. It is divided into a preparatory methods part and a supervision part.

During the internship semester, we offer accompanying courses with a focus on motivating students. In these courses, students can investigate issues relating to motivation or motivational difficulties or the measurement and promotion of motivation in their projects. Previous experience from the LESD, LES or LES-FA modules is helpful, but not essential. In our courses, we endeavor to prepare students for their study projects in a very structured way. To this end, we suggest possible concrete research questions and research designs, although students are also welcome to realize their own questions on the topics mentioned. We offer project ideas that are aimed at different school levels and subjects, so that the courses are always suitable for students of all subject combinations.

  • BA/MA Thesis

We primarily supervise Bachelor's and Master's theses of student teachers on topics relating to motivation, emotion, and emotion regulation in a school context. In certain exceptional cases, Bachelor's or Master's students majoring in psychology can also write their thesis with us. These theses are typically quantitative-empirical theses; in exceptional cases, theoretical and qualitative-empirical theses can also be written. For empirical theses in particular it is advisable to look for a topic and supervision at an early stage of one’s studies.
