Spring 2026 holds new professional challenges for the AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship:

apl. Prof. Dr. Philipp Schäpers has been working as Managing Director of Management Diagnostics at ifp – Institute for Management Diagnostics since April 1st.

Dr. Franz Mönke has been working as a Research Associate (Postdoc) in the AE Organizational and Business Psychology (Prof. Dr. Guido Hertel) since April 2026.

Dr. Henrik Heinemann has been working as a Senior Consultant at HRpepper since May 2026.

The recently published article “Evaluating potential political bias in recruitment: Effects of extreme vs. moderate party affiliation” by Denise Vesper, Franz Mönke, Tabea Regh, Philipp Schäpers, and Cornelius König has been awarded an Editor Commendation by the editors of the Journal of Business and Psychology. This initiative recognizes outstanding papers; in 2025, 16 articles received this distinction. Congratulations!

Last week, our doctoral student Max Weldert followed an invitation from Prof. Dr. Ralph Hamann for a short research stay at the Graduate School of Business (GSB) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). There, he gathered numerous new ideas for his research and established international contacts with other researchers. Max found it particularly exciting to have the opportunity to hold his own seminar on his research in the field of entrepreneurship and well-being. Max returns to Münster recharged by the sunny environment  and full of new impressions and ideas.

The Department of Psychology and Sport Science at the University of Münster has appointed Philipp Schäpers as an apl. Professor (extraordinaory professor) of Psychology of Entrepreneurship. After nearly 4.5 exciting years as Assistant Professor and head of the Psychology of Entrepreneurship unit, we are delighted to continue our collaboration with now apl. Prof. Dr. Philipp Schäpers. Congratulations! :)

New research project: Together with PwC Germany, we are currently examining and validating innovative tools in employer branding, recruiting, and onboarding. The project, led by Henrik Heinemann and Philipp Schäpers, investigates how immersive applications (e.g., a virtual reality cyber game) influence applicants’ motivation, acceptance, and satisfaction compared with more traditional methods. Which technologies are already convincing today? Where do we see potential—and what concerns do young talents have?

Initial results from a sample of graduates and young professionals provide valuable insights into the impact and acceptance of immersive formats—and show that technological innovation in HR is successful when it creates genuine value for people.

What does leadership look like in the future? AI-assisted leadership is a widely discussed topic and was also the central theme of the Personnel Congress 2025 organized by the Federal Association of Medium-Sized Businesses in cooperation with Aschendorff Media. The congress took place at the end of September in Münster, where 340 participants from medium-sized companies in the Münsterland and East Westphalia-Lippe economic regions, along with 15 speakers, exchanged insights on current trends and developments.

In his keynote, Philipp Schäpers presented current psychological findings on AI-assisted leadership: analytical and structuring tasks, as well as an increasing share of interpersonal communication, can now be successfully supported by AI tools. Many thanks for the invitation and the stimulating exchange!

The major gathering of the Division of Work, Organizational, and Economic Psychology—held jointly with colleagues from Engineering Psychology—took place last week at Leuphana University in Lüneburg.

The AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship was also represented: in a double symposium on digitalization trends in personnel selection, Philipp Schäpers presented an AI-based interview guide generator, Henrik Heinemann introduced the development of a situational judgment test on social entrepreneurship, and Franz Mönke showcased an eye-tracking study on social media screenings. The program offered plenty of opportunities for exchange and professional-political discussion, followed by engaging poster sessions, panel discussions, and the division’s assembly. It was a wonderful exchange in a fantastic setting—many thanks to the excellent organizing team led by Laura Venz!

The Academy of Management (AoM) Annual Meeting is the world’s largest and most influential management conference. This year, more than 13,000 participants gathered in Copenhagen—the first time the AoM was held outside the United States. Across hundreds of sessions, researchers discussed the latest findings and emerging trends.

Among them was the PhD team of the AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship, which presented recent results from our unit in poster sessions: Henrik Heinemann on the development of a situational judgment test to assess social entrepreneurship, Max Weldert on entrepreneurs’ wellbeing, and Franz Mönke on eye-tracking during social media screenings in personnel selection. A particularly enriching aspect was the conference’s strong interdisciplinary character: as psychologists, we often focus on micro-level research, whereas many AoM colleagues emphasize macro-level outcomes. This contrast proved highly inspiring and offered valuable impulses on how different disciplines can mutually enrich each other.

Last week, Philipp Schäpers was a guest in the project group “AI in Personnel Selection and Development” of Forum Assessment e.V. Founded in 1977, this association brings together leading german HR experts from industry, academia, consulting, and the public sector. It serves as a platform for discussing current trends and the latest research findings in personnel selection. Philipp Schäpers presented a current project from our research unit: a tool for AI-based generation of interview guides, developed in line with the latest scientific standards for valid selection interviews.

What can you actually do with a psychology degree? A career, of course—but where, and how? This was the central question at the 2025 PWM Practice Days, held last week at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Münster. The Practice Days are aimed at students with a strong interest in Work and Organizational Psychology and are designed to showcase the exciting positions in which graduates with this focus can work. Now in their 23rd year, the Practice Days were once again organized by dedicated students from the association Psychologie in Wirtschaft und Medien e.V. (Psychology in Business and Media) together with Philipp Schäpers.

Last week, the writing workshop of the Work, Organizational, and Economic Psychology Division of the German Psychological Society took place. This annual workshop offers early-career researchers input on academic writing as well as peer and mentor feedback on their own writing projects. The workshop was organized by the team led by Sabine Sonnentag (University of Mannheim). Alongside nearly 40 early-career researchers from the division across Germany, Philipp Schäpers had traveled to Mannheim as a mentor. In a talk about the normality of failure in the academic system, he encouraged early-career colleagues to adopt realistic rather than exaggerated expectations and shared his own experiences. Perseverance and persistence—that, according to the other mentors as well, is the only way forward. Philipp Schäpers also provided feedback on writing projects as part of his mentoring role. Franz Mönke also participated in the workshop as an early-career researcher.

Franz Mönke participated last week in the 22nd Congress of Work and Organizational Psychology in Prague. This leading European conference in work, organizational, and economic psychology is held every two years by the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP). In Prague, Franz Mönke presented current research projects from the Psychology of Entrepreneurship unit: a study on eye movements during LinkedIn screenings of job applicants, and an AI-powered tool for generating robust interview guides. With nearly 1,000 contributions, the conference offered an intense and inspiring program.

In mid-April, data:unplugged 2025—one of the largest AI and data conferences in Europe—took place in Münster. As a sponsor of the event, the University of Münster Professional School hosted a pre-event keynote by Philipp Schäpers. The title of his talk: "Leadership by AI: How Much Human Is Still Needed in Leadership?" More and more organizations are outsourcing leadership tasks such as promotions to algorithms—is the human element in leadership becoming obsolete? For Philipp Schäpers, the answer is clear: The use of AI can fill gaps in leadership and personnel selection and provide valuable support, for example by taking over analytical and structuring tasks. But the interpersonal aspect is also improving: The latest AI tools are increasingly capable of recognizing human emotions and personality traits and incorporating them into communication.

Our PhD student Max Weldert returned last week from the 21st Annual Social Entrepreneurship Conference in Mexico City. The conference was co-hosted by EGADE and IMD Business School and offered fascinating insights into current research on social entrepreneurship. Thanks to the international exchange with researchers from over 20 countries, Max returns with numerous new ideas and impulses for his research.

We are delighted that Max represented our research unit in Mexico City and are already looking forward to the next edition in 2026 in Lausanne!

Franz Mönke attended this year’s Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) Conference in Denver last week. SIOP is the largest conference in our field and offered exciting insights into the latest research in work, organizational, and business psychology. A particular focus of the program was the use of AI technologies in recruiting and personnel selection. The AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship was represented at SIOP with two symposium contributions. The conference also provided numerous opportunities to connect with colleagues from around the world. We’re taking home valuable feedback to further develop and discuss our studies—thank you, Denver!

The AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship looks back on this year’s ACERE Conference, which took place from February 10 to 14, 2025, in Melbourne, Australia. Now in its 21st edition, the event was hosted by Deakin University and brought together scholars from around the world to discuss current trends and developments in the field of entrepreneurship.

Our PhD candidates Henrik Heinemann and Max Weldert were well represented with two research presentations. A particular highlight of the conference was the Doctoral Consortium, where Henrik and Max received detailed feedback on their dissertation projects from leading entrepreneurship researchers. In addition to the academic program, Melbourne offered excellent networking opportunities—especially with colleagues from Asia and Oceania. For Henrik, the ACERE Conference also marked a perfect starting point for his research stay at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia.

Philipp Schäpers has officially joined the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Selection and Assessment. Congratulations!

At Enactus Münster, the local chapter of the world’s largest student entrepreneurship initiative with over 75,000 members, students from the University of Münster develop start-up ideas with a focus on ecological and social impact.

Recently, the Final Pitch Event took place, where the innovation teams presented their refined start-up ideas developed throughout the semester. Together with companies, representatives of Münster’s start-up scene, and universities, the event provided valuable feedback and support for these new projects. Philipp Schäpers was part of the jury – congratulations to the winning team, Seads! It was an exciting evening filled with inspiring ideas.

The seminar "Personnel Selection: Recruiting and Assessment," led by Philipp Schäpers, achieved an outstanding 2nd place in the "Best Seminar" category during the teaching evaluation for the winter semester 2024/25. Congratulations, and many thanks to all students for their excellent participation!

As part of the Take-Off Days organized by the Münster Centre for Emerging Researchers (CERes), Philipp Schäpers delivered a keynote on the normality of failure in academic careers. Academic CVs often create the impression of seamless trajectories and prestigious awards, while rejections or setbacks are rarely mentioned. As a result, early-career researchers are frequently confronted with unrealistic expectations about their own success. Philipp Schäpers emphasized that failures are the norm, not the exception! In his keynote, he encouraged attendees to set realistic expectations and approach failures in the academic system with greater transparency. Progress and development, he argued, are impossible without mistakes and setbacks – we fail forward!

HR Practitioners Meet Researchers: Franz Mönke attended the CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition in Manchester, UK. From lab to practice: This year’s CIPD conference brought together over 6,500 HR professionals, companies, and researchers to discuss and exchange insights on the latest trends in human resources. Keynotes, workshops, and, this year, at the Evidence Lab Live: Franz Mönke as an expert on the topic of cybervetting – social media assessments in personnel selection.
Franz had exciting days: The CIPD exhibition featured several companies specializing in background checks for candidates, including social media screenings. This gives us fresh motivation to take a closer look at the implications and decision-making processes behind this widespread practice!

This week, Philipp Schäpers, Henrik Heinemann, and Franz Mönke traveled to Vienna for the 53rd Congress of the German Psychological Society (DGPs).

Our team brought along some first insights into our latest research: Philipp Schäpers presented findings on the development of a Situational Judgment Test using Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT), Henrik Heinemann shared exciting insights into the psychometric properties of entrepreneurship scales, and Franz Mönke spoke about the (new) role of religion in personnel selection through social media assessments.

What a great experience! So much exciting research, dedicated researchers, and fascinating exchanges.

The Student Start-up Monitor (SSM) enters its second round: We are pleased to announce the release of the Student Start-Up Monitor (SSM) 2024, which has been led by the Division Psychology of Entrepreneurship.
The SSM provides a comprehensive insight into student entrepreneurial activities at German universities and identifies potential optimizations.

The survey serves as a snapshot of the student entrepreneurial ecosystem at German universities, assessing the current status and potential for optimization of entrepreneurship offerings:

🔹2350 students from all over Germany participated in the SSM, including more than 270 founders.
🔹What entrepreneurship offerings are already available and how are they being utilized?
🔹What are the biggest challenges for student entrepreneurs?

The SSM 2024 addresses these issues and provides up-to-date insights into the student entrepreneurial ecosystem, aiming to better understand and improve the conditions and challenges for future entrepreneurs at German universities. The monitor was implemented by Max Weldert and Henrik Heinemann, under the leadership of Philipp Schäpers and in cooperation with the REACH-Euregio Start-up Center.

Yesterday, the Demoday 2024 took place at the REACH Euregio Start-Up Center - a real highlight of the Münster start-up scene. At this event, the best university start-ups from our region competed to convince the jury, investors, and audience of their innovative ideas and business models. An exciting program featuring a keynote by Sophia Rödiger (1KOMMA5°) and numerous networking opportunities made for an exciting evening. It was also a great opportunity for AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship to exchange ideas with colleagues and make new contacts. Thanks to everyone involved and congratulations to the winning start-ups, ChemInnovation, Flux Robotics, and Truion!

Here are some impressions:

At the 43rd Annual Congress of the German Society of Senology (DGS), which took place from June 6 to 8, 2024, in Dresden, the topic of recruiting was also in focus. The DGS is dedicated to promoting breast health and organizes the congress to discuss current and relevant medical issues. The congress brings together experts from many disciplines annually to discuss the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer.

However, senology is also acutely affected by a shortage of young professionals and skilled workers. Therefore, Philipp Schäpers was invited to give a keynote speech on recruiting and professional motivation in Generation Z.

In his keynote, Philipp Schäpers addressed how the conditions for recruiting new talent have changed. The problem in the industry is not the supposedly new and, by traditional employers, perceived as unattainable demands of an allegedly new Generation Z (for which there is no empirical evidence). Due to the shortage of skilled workers, applicants have more choices and can thus set higher demands on potential employers. This forces companies to make their job offers more attractive to compete with other potential employers. In his keynote, Philipp Schäpers advocated staying adaptive and taking the needs of applicants seriously.

Last week, Philipp Schäpers, Henrik Heinemann, and Franz Mönke participated in this year's Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) conference in Chicago. As the largest gathering in our field, SIOP offered fascinating insights into the latest research in workplace, organizational, and economic psychology. The AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship was well represented with two posters and a symposium, and we're bringing back exciting feedback for the further development and discussion of our studies! Beyond the academic program, Chicago provided numerous networking opportunities with both new and well-acquainted colleagues. Thank you, Chicago!

Great news: Franz Mönke has successfully secured the Professor Mick Marchington Applied Research Grant from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD. This grant supports the projects of exceptional early-career researchers with £6000. The funds will be used for a field study on cybervetting, "Social Media Assessments in Selection: Toward a Better Understanding of the (In)Validity of Cybervetting." The project is a collaboration between Franz Mönke, Philipp Schäpers, Filip Lievens (Singapore Management University), and Jana Holtmann (University of Leipzig). Congratulations, we look forward to the first results!

Franz Mönke has recently started his research visit at Singapore Management University, Lee Kong Chian School of Business. This visit allows him to further work with Filip Lievens on social media assessments in personnel selection and is a part of Franz' Lim Kim San Fellowship.

Our external doctoral student, Max Weldert, has embarked on a four-month research stay at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico as part of his doctoral studies. The Monterrey campus is widely known as the largest hub for entrepreneurship in Latin America. During his stay, Max will be working closely with the Institute for the Future of Education, allowing him not only to experience the local culture intensely but also to explore new research approaches for his dissertation on entrepreneurship and well-being. We wish him success and a great time!

The Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University has named Franz Mönke as Lim Kim San Fellow 2023-24. This competitive fellowship allows Franz to conduct a 4-week research stay with Prof. Filip Lievens, Ph.D., at the prestigious Faculty for Organizational Behavior and Human Resources. Excellent news, congratulations!

Philipp Schäpers, Henrik Heinemann, and Franz Mönke successfully participated in the 13th Congress of the German Psychological Society, Section for Work, Organizational and Business Psychology, held in Kassel, Germany this week. There were many exciting inputs in highly current symposia and keynotes. Additionally, we were able to discuss current research projects from our division with this specialist audience: Insights on gender stereotypes in situational judgment tests, social responsibility as a potential advantage in personnel recruitment, and missing information in cybervetting were newly presented by us. We thank our colleagues for the exchange and the organizers for a great conference at the University of Kassel!

An exciting guest from Singapore: Last week, Prof. Filip Lievens, Lee Kong Chian Professor for HR at the Singapore Management University, visited us at REACH. We are very pleased that one of the most influential psychologists in the field of management and HR accepted Philipp Schäpers' invitation to join the AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship at the REACH Euregio Start-up Center and the University of Münster.

Together with students, PhD students and professors, in his keynote speech "From Good Research to Publishable Manuscripts", Prof. Filip Lievens took a look behind the scenes of top tier publications - and why it can be worthwhile to revise the first 2 pages so often. In the historical atmosphere of the castle's ballroom, Filip Lievens gave valuable tips on networking, reading between the lines when revising, and good writing (so that even your own grandmother would understand) to the many young scientists present. This insightful evening ended with a Meet&Greet and the opportunity for personal exchange.

Later in the week, in addition to intensive research colloquia in the AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship, Prof. Lievens gave a workshop for the start-ups at REACH. What are the requirements of my start-up for employees? How do I select my first employees in a scientifically sound manner? How do I find a suitable co-founder? In an interactive session, the founders had the unique opportunity to gain insights into the state-of-the-art of psychological personnel selection.

We are happy about this successful and intensive week with Filip Lievens in Münster! We would like to thank him for his visit and look forward to further strengthening this research cooperation between the University of Münster, the AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship, and the Singapore Management University in the future.
 

Franz Mönke participated in this year's junior researcher workshop organized by the Division of Work, Organizational, and Economic Psychology in the German Psychological Society. The workshop took place from June 21 to June 23, 2023, at the Technical University of Braunschweig. This workshop serves as a central hub for networking among early-career researchers in our discipline in Germany. During the workshop, all participants had the opportunity to present their dissertation projects, and peers as well as experienced mentors provided feedback and suggestions. The workshop also included a program focusing on working conditions in academia, the publication process, and the diverse career opportunities available with a psychology Ph.D., which complemented the highly engaging sessions.

In the focus group "Technology and Personnel Selection," Franz presented a study design examining the psychometric properties of social media screenings in personnel selection. There were also ample opportunities for networking with other doctoral students. We would like to express our gratitude to the team led by Simone Kauffeld at the Technical University of Braunschweig for their excellent organization of the workshop. Additionally, we would like to thank the Santander Mobility Fund at the University of Münster for granting Franz a travel stipend for attending the workshop.

Henrik Heinemann und Franz Mönke participated in the 21st Congress of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP) in Katowice, Poland, last week. Innovative ideas, robust designs, and inspiring keynotes made the conference a great success for our doctoral students. Our colleagues also presented work from the AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship: current research findings on the role of social and environmental responsibility in the attractiveness of start-ups as employers, as well as the consequences of lacking information in personnel selection with social media, sparked discussions with colleagues from across Europe. We are happy to announce that the Department of Psychology at the University of Münster honors Philipp Schäpers with its best teaching award in the 2022/23 term. Philipp's course "Personnel Selection: Recruiting and Assessment" received the best student ratings at the department. Congratulations!

Earlier this week, we had our christmas get-together with our dear colleagues from the Organizational and Business Psychology group. While enjoying some traditional mulled wine and Stollen (sorry, there is no English word for this German cake), we looked back at an exciting and successful year. We wish you very happy holidays and a happy new year!

Good news: Franz Mönke won the 3rd prize in the poster award at this year's science to start-up convention, Münster: Their poster "Politics Speak Louder Than Skills" presents the master thesis of Franz Mönke (Supervisors: Philipp Schäpers, Ursula Hess); the study was expanded in the last months together with Philipp Schäpers, Filip Lievens and Ursula Hess. The study focused on similarity biases in personnel selection, caused by political cues in social media assessments (cybervetting). Congratulations to the team!

The science to start-up convention took place at November 10th, organized by the REACH Euregio Start-Up Center. More than 200 scientists, entrepreneurs and students got to know Münster's start-up scene and discussed, how findings from science can be transformed to successful business cases and foundings. A start-up pitch contest and virtual poster exhibition were highlights of the day. Here, you find more impressions.

Franz Mönke and Philipp Schäpers just published an article in Wirtschaftspsychologie aktuell, a HR practitioner's magazine of the German Association of Psychologists (BDP)
"#Cybervetting: How social media changes personal selection"

In this article, we review what HR professionals aim to achieve with social media assessments, how researchers discuss the validity of this emerging practice controversially, how biases might lead to adverse impact in cybervetting, and how rules can help organizations to engage in meaningful cybervetting.

After all, cybervetting seems to be used a lot, but studies a little. That is why we call for an open debate in science, society, and HR practice about the role that social media can or cannot play in personnel selection.

The REACH EUREGIO Start-up Center has awarded its Thesis Award to Henrik Heinemann and his master thesis "Curious enough to Start Up? Incremental Validity of Epistemic Curiosity for Predicting Entrepreneurship and the Mediating Role of Entrepreneurial Alertness". This price is dedicated to highly innovative theses in applied sciences, that will drive innovation and product development. A great achievement, congratulations to Henrik! The thesis was supervised by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Philipp Schäpers and Prof. Dr. Patrick Mussel (FU Berlin).

Today, a film crew from the University of Münster accompanied Philipp Schäpers on his way through the Department of Psychology. Philipp will be part in a short documentary about early career professors at the University of Münster. We are looking forward to it, here we can give you a short sneak preview...

In this week, Henrik Heinemann and Franz Mönke took part in the 52nd Conference of the German Psychological Association, the largest conference of academic psychology in Germany. We learned a lot from all these inspiring keynotes, current studies, and great chats with our fellow psychologists. It was fantastic to get to know to many other colleagues! At the conference, we had the ability to present and discuss our latest findings from studies on curiosity of entrepreneurs and political biases in personnel selection with social media. Thank you, University of Hildesheim and DGPs for hosting this spectacular week!
 

We are very happy to welcome a delegation from the Universidad de La Habana, Cuba at the University of Münster! Dr. C. Adalberto Avila Vidal, Dr. Klency González Hernández, Dr. C. Yaima Blanco García and Dr. Daybel Pañellas Alvarez from the Faculty of Psychology were our guests in this research exchange as part of an ERASMUS-cooperation between the faculties. We are looking forward to many opportunities to discuss research projects, talk about strengthening the research cooperation and develop new research ideas. 
The AE Psychology of Entrepreneurship looks forward to productive meetings with Dr. Daybel Pañellas Alvarez and to continue the work on projects on entrepreneurship and Situational Judgment Tests. Henrik Heinemann and Franz Mönke send their best regards from Havana, Cuba! As part of an ERASMUS-cooperation between the University of Münster and the Universidad de La Habana, they are part of a two-week research exchange with the Faculty of Psychology. They took part in the 12. Encuentro Internacional de Estudiantes de Psicología, presented current research projects, and developed ideas on cross-cultural research in entrepreneurshop and psychological assessment, together with our cooperation partner Prof. Dra. Daybel Pañellas Alvarez. Thank you for welcoming us! We learned so much about the Cuban perspectives on psychology, society, and everyday life. We are looking forward to a fruitful research cooperation between Münster and La Habana.

Starting in January, Henrik Heinemann, M.Sc. is joining us as a Doctoral Researcher. After finishing his Bachelor's Degree at FU Berlin, Henrik came to Münster and completed his Master of Science at the University of Münster. Recently, he finished his thesis about the Entrepreneurial Personality and will now start as a PhD student in the department of Psychology of Entrepreneurship. Welcome to the Team, Henrik!
