    Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used across human resource management (HRM) functions, yet successful integration is contingent upon these tools being trusted within the organizations. Whereas longstanding cognitive models of trust have been extended to technology and AI as references of trust, motivational influences on trust in technologies have been neglected thus far. However, the consideration of motivational drivers is particularly important to understand and predict different stakeholder views on trust in AI. We integrate cognitive frameworks of trust in AI with more recent approaches of trust motivation stemming from interpersonal trust research. Based on this new integrative model, we specify motivational drivers and cognitive processes for trust in AI for four separate HRM stakeholder perspectives: the employer, decision makers, decision targets, and HR professionals. Particularly the perspective of HR professionals has been neglected so far, despite the fact that this group is often closely involved with the implementation of AI systems and may see considerable changes to their job tasks after AI adoption. We discuss the theoretical implications of the different stakeholder perspectives for future research and outline specific practical implications of our integrative model.

    Abstract: Despite growing prevalence of digitalcommunication, computer-mediated negotiations have a negative reputation inscientific research. However, extant studies focused predominantly on leancommunication technologies (e.g., email). We examined effects of communicationmedia on trust and negotiation outcomes considering current-state technologieswith rich information transmission (i.e., videoconferencing). Based oncommunication and trust theories, we expected that video-based as compared toface-to-face negotiations lead to lower trust due to perceptions of lowersocial presence, higher psychological distance and higher risk in videoconferences. However, we expected information reprocessability as technologicalfeature to reduce risk perceptions and thereby the negative effect ofcommunication medium. In a preregistered experimental study (n = 320), dyads negotiated a workcontract. Communication medium (face-to-face – video conference) andinformation reprocessability (not videotaped – videotaped) were manipulated ina between-subject design with time (pre-negotiation – post-negotiation) asadditional within-subject factor. Perceived risk, psychological distance, andsocial presence were measured as mediating processes. Consistent with ourhypotheses, communication medium affected trust indirectly via social presence.However, the overall differences between communication media regarding trust,economic outcomes and negotiation time were not significant. Together, thefindings suggest that face-to-face and computer-mediated negotiations can yieldquite similar results when using rich communication media.

    Von der Linde, M., Herbster, C., Dobel, C., Festag, S. & Thielsch, M. T. (in press). Creating Safe Environments: Optimal Alarming of Laypersons in Fire Prevention. Ergonomics

    Abstract: Hazards like fires occur regularly and can cost people’s lives. Optimal auditory alarm signals enable laypeople to recognise dangers and to protect themselves. Existing fire alarm sound research focuses on alarm sounds and voice alerts presented singularly. We explored a combination of both and aimed to identify alarm signals that work optimally in everyday life. Thus, we conducted two online experiments: In Study 1 (N = 379), we tested eight alarm sounds regarding their typicality, their familiarity, their arousal, their valence, and their dominance. Siren-like alarm sounds were the most effective. In Study 2 (N = 206), we combined the four most effective alarm sounds with a voice alert. The voice alert reinforced ambiguity reduction, action motivation, and action intention. Hence, we suggest using alarm sounds with siren-like patterns. They should be combined with a voice alert to foster a quick and specific (target task-oriented) reaction.

    Abstract: Employment is critical for refugees’ positive integration into a receiving country. Enabling employment requires cross-sector collaborations, that is, employers collaborating with different stakeholders such as refugees, local employees, other employers, unofficial/official supporters, and authorities. A vital element of cross-sector collaborations is trust, yet the complexity of cross-sector collaborations may challenge the formation and maintenance of trust. Following a theory elaboration approach, this qualitative study with 37 employers and 27 support workers in Germany explores how employers’ experiences in cross-sector collaborations on refugees’ labor market integration affect their trust in other stakeholders in this cross-sector space. Specifically, we explored employers’ perceptions of trust breaches, and how these perceptions affect their further engagement in cross-sector collaborations on refugee integration. Based on our findings, we propose a process model that describes how unmet collaboration expectations and negative assessments of collaborators’ attitudes and behaviors lead to perceived trust breaches which, in turn, lead to employers’ hesitancy to hire refugees and/or to engage in cross-sector collaborations. In doing so, we extend existing theory on trust within organizations to the cross-sector context of refugee integration, uncovering context-specific meanings to trustworthiness dimensions and illustrating how breaches of different trustworthiness dimensions can interact. Moreover, we show how social policies, resources, and trustors’ perceived vulnerability in collaborations shape their risk perceptions. This study highlights the central role of trust for refugee integration and illustrates how missing goals and process clarity endanger sustainable collaborations.
