Transport and climate: a difficult relationship. The opportunities of climate-friendly mobility in the Münsterland region
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, the Münsteraner Klimagespräche will enter the next round. On the topic of “Transport and climate: a difficult relationship. The opportunities of climate-friendly mobility in the Münsterland region”, ZIN scientist Prof. Dr. Antonia Graf will discuss the topic with two other experts. The climate talk starts at 7 p.m. in the vhs-Forum, Aegidiimarkt 2. Admission is free. Registration is not required.
In no other climate-relevant area are greenhouse gas reductions lagging so far behind climate targets as in the transport sector. This also applies to Münster, where transport-related CO2 emissions have only been reduced by 15 percent over the past 35 years. And this is despite various efforts and occasional advances such as cycle routes, a shortage of parking space, a cargo bike boom and 30 km/h speed zones.
In the Münsteraner Klimagespräch, political and environmental scientist Prof. Dr. Antonia Graf, Dr. Jana Buchard (Industrie- und Handelskammer Nord Westfalen) and Thomas Lins (Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) – Regionalverband Münsterland), moderated by Andrea Blome (City of Münster's Transport Committee), will discuss the following questions, among others: Why is there so little progress and such heated debates in the transport sector in particular when it comes to climate protection? Which measures are particularly effective in reducing transport-related CO2 emissions in Münster and the region? We will also take a look at which strategic steps with which transport stakeholders are particularly necessary next and which ideas for an ultimately climate-neutral transport sector have a chance of being implemented and will also find the necessary social acceptance.
The Münsteraner Klimagespräche are prepared by a group of sponsors consisting of the Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Nachhaltigkeitsforschung at the University of Münster (ZIN), Evangelisches Forum, the Umweltforum Münster e. V., the Beirat für kommunale Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, the Beirat für Klimaschutz, and the vhs Münster.
