Language Requirements for Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes
All courses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes are taught in German. Applicants must therefore provide proof of sufficient German Language Proficiency.
No proof of German Language Proficiency is required for the Certificate Programmes „Music Certificate“ and „Artist Diploma“.
Language Proficiency Certificate
If German is not your native language and you did not obtain your university entrance qualification (Abitur, high school diploma, etc.) at a German-speaking institution, you require a B2 Language Certificate. Please upload the certificate to the Online Application Portal by the application deadline.
The following Language Certificates are accepted as part of the application:
- Goethe Certificate B2
- telc German B2 (with a grade of at least “good” / 2.0)
- DSH 1
- TestDaF (at least 3 points in all sections)
- German Language Diploma (DSD II) with four B2 grades
- onSET B2
If you are unable to provide proof of German Language Proficiency by the application deadline, you must take a written German Language Examination as part of the Entrance Examination.
German Language Examination
To be admitted to the German Language Examination, you must have passed the other parts of the Entrance Examination.
If you are unable to provide a recognized B2-level German Language Certificate by the application deadline, you will take a written German Language Examination as part of the Entrance Examination. The examination assesses whether your general and music-related German Language Skills are sufficient to begin a degree programme in music.
Tips for Preparation
To prepare for the examination, we recommend that you
- start preparing well in advance.
- work carefully through the sample examination provided for the written German Language Examination.
- attend a German Language Course or take advantage of online or local preparation courses for a B2-level German Language Examination.

Important Note
All mandatory examination components must be completed. Failure to participate in any compulsory examination component will result in the Entrance Examination being considered failed overall.
Language Year
If you have not yet reached the required level of German in the Language Examination, you may, under certain conditions, be admitted on the condition that you complete a Language Year.
To be eligible, you must have passed the Live Entrance Audition in the Major Subject as part of the Entrance Examination with at least 22 points. Furthermore, a Language Year can only be offered if sufficient capacity is available.
During the Language Year, your place in the degree programme will be reserved for you. You will use this time to specifically improve your German Language Skills and reach the level of proficiency required to begin your studies. You are not entitled to receive major-specific coursework during the Language Year. The Language Year does not count toward the standard period of study.
To improve your German Language Skills, you may attend a language course at a language school or make use of the German Language Courses offered by the University of Münster.
