MNF Day

Thank you to all those who attended our annual open day in 2025!

This year's event premiered a new blitz talk format, which was an immediate hit and sparked further enthusiastic conversations during lunch and coffee breaks. In addition, Dr. Maik Stappers gave the MNF annual update and students presented their research during a poster session where they competed for the "MNF Day Best Poster Award" (see below for details on this and the Blitz Talk prize winner).

Keynote Presentation

We were honored to feature a keynote presentation by Jan van Schoot, an ASML Fellow, on "High-NA EUV Nanolithography Tools." The impressive NXE and EXE systems at ASML Holland utilize extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light to enable high-resolution lithography, making mass production of the world's most advanced microchips possible, driving Moore's Law forward, and supporting novel transistor designs and chip architectures.

Blitz Talks

Following the keynote presentation, we hosted our popular blitz talks, where students and staff presented their research in brief, five-minute talks. The blitz talks covered the full range of interdisciplinary research at the MNF, with presenters including Jannis Bensmann from the Bratschitsch Group (Physics), Ganna Korniushchenko from the Wilde Group (Materials Physics), Steffen Lohrmann from the Ravoo Group (Organic Chemistry), Roland Jaha from Pixel Photonics, Jaganandha Panda, our new staff engineer at the MNF, Niklas Vollmar from the Salinga Group (Materials Physics), Ivonne Bente from the Pernice Group (Physics), Ajisha Chathyattu from the Sanchez Group (Molecular Imaging), and Connor Graham-Scott from the Schuck Group (Physics).

Talk: "Fabrication of Magnonic Nanowaveguides with a Focused Ion Beam"

Professor Rudolf Bratschitsch built upon the introductory blitz talk by his student, Jannis Bensmann, explaining how the increasing demand for computing power drives the need for research on efficient information processing. He highlighted his group's latest advances in fabricating waveguides for spin waves, showcasing their ability to create the largest spin wave waveguide network to date using the MNF's Raith Velion to implant silicon ions into yttrium iron garnet (YIG).

Student Awards

A highlight of the MNF Day was the presentation of awards to students for their contributions to the day.

The "MNF Day 2025 Best Poster Award" went to Jannis Bensmann from the Bratschitsch Group for his poster "Fabrication of Spin-Wave Devices with a Silicon Ion Beam," which described his research on a maskless silicon ion implantation technique to fabricate low-loss spin-wave waveguides in a thin YIG film using the Raith Velion machine at the MNF.

Niklas Vollmar from the Salinga Group received the "Best Blitz Talk Prize" for his presentation "Reversibly Tuning the Optical Properties of Glass," in which he explained how he uses electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching at the MNF for his research on novel materials for information processing.

Get involved in the next MNF Day!

At the Münster Nanofabrication Facility, we open our doors once a year to:

  • showcase our research
  • highlight our cutting-edge instrumentation and newest technologies
  • provide a forum for networking and interdisciplinary scientific exchange in the fields of nanoscience and nanofabrication

If we use your technologies in our facility or you conduct research at the MNF, consider getting involved. Please contact us!
