Prof. Martin Winter was awarded the “IALB Research Award” for his pioneering research in the field of electrochemical energy storage and energy conversion, especially with regard to electromobility. The prize was awarded to the battery researcher by the International Automotive Lithium Battery Association (IALB) at the 13th International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automobile Applications (ABAA).

For the first time, the ABAA took place on the African continent. Academics, representatives of government institutions and players from the battery and automotive industries met in Marrakech, Morocco, from 16-19 October 2022. The international conference was organised by the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), the initiative ENSUS and the International Automotive Lithium Battery Association.

Martin Winter is founding director and scientific director of MEET Battery Research Center at the University of Münster and of Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS; IEK-12), a branch of Forschungszentrum Jülich. The chemist has been researching in the field of electrochemical energy storage and energy conversion for more than 30 years. His focus is on the development of new materials, components and cell designs for lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries as well as for alternative battery systems.

Michael Berube, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Sustainable Transportation in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, congratulates Prof. Martin Winter.
